Job Description

Do you enjoy helping people?  Do you like to make a difference in someone's day? JCPL is looking for individuals with strong customer service skills who are interested in assisting patrons in finding just the right book, answering unusual research questions, or helping with information technology needs. 

Public Services Substitutes support daily service delivery to library patrons in the absence of location Librarians and Associates.  Public Services Substitutes are on-call temporary staff who may work at any of JCPL's ten locations or the Bookmobile up to a maximum of 20 hours per week.  Schedules may be arranged in advance or for last minute needs.  Shifts may include days, evenings, weekends, or holidays. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provides information, referrals, and reader's advisory assistance to patrons in person, by phone, mail, and via electronic means. 
  • Performs simple to moderately complex research activities.
  • Advises patrons on appropriate materials and locates materials through the use of manual and electronic databases in JCPL, other library systems, or other sources.
  • Refers patrons to community resources and other appropriate agencies and assists with online searches for these resources. 
  • Addresses and resolves complaints from patrons or forwards complaints to appropriate staff as necessary.
  • Promotes and presents programs, classes, workshops, and activities at library locations and off-site, including seasonal programs and Storytime for children. 
  • Provides library instruction and patron education to the public, individually and in groups.
  • Routinely provides direct customer service.
  • Conducts library tours.
  • Assists with evaluating and maintaining the existing collection through recommending and weeding of materials.
  • Complies with laws governing patron privacy and confidentiality under CRS24-90-119, and the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association, as well as ADA governing public access to space and technology.
