
Under general direction, performs a wide range of duties supporting the library needs of the general public with particular emphasis on the needs of children. Duties include planning, presenting, evaluating developmentally appropriate library programming; advising and assisting children in their use and evaluation of library materials and information sources; conducting outreach to children in community venues including schools and child care settings; actively promoting children's use of the library and library resources; advocating for children within the library organization. Work is performed in accordance with general library policies and accepted professional practices. The advanced difficulty of work assignments and the greater independence with which work is performed differentiates this class from the Librarian I class. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. May directly supervise assigned staff.
Children's librarians work collaboratively with each other to support system-wide initiatives while developing and presenting location-specific programs and events. Professional librarians participate fully in the operation of the library, including occasionally serving as librarian in charge.
