Job Description
Head of Information, Research, and Outreach The University of Colorado Denver (UCD) Health Sciences Library [http://hsclibrary.uchsc.edu] seeks resourceful, energetic and innovative candidates to provide outstanding leadership for a senior level position as Head of Information, Research, and Outreach. The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of reference, mediated searching, clinical and research support services, the library’s liaison program, and outreach services. The UCD Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC) includes the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Dental Medicine, the College of Nursing, the Graduate School, and the University of Colorado Hospital. Our $35 million, state-of-the-art library opened in October 2007, and is located at the crossroads of the Anschutz Medical Campus and the Colorado Science and Technology Park. The library is the physical and digital hub of knowledge on the campus, coordinating access to information in support of learning, research, clinical care and service to the community. The Health Sciences Library provides the largest collection of health sciences information resources in Colorado with a digital collection of more than 30,000 online journals, hundreds of electronic textbooks, and online databases. Supervision: The Head of Information, Research, and Outreach reports to the Deputy Director. The position has supervisory responsibilities including oversight of faculty. Major responsibilities: •Establish policies, procedures, priorities and goals for the department; •Oversee departmental activities, work assignments, and special projects; •Plan, develop and assess programs, services and policies designed to meet needs of primary users; •Monitor and stay abreast of reference trends and practices in health sciences libraries; •Develop, implement, coordinate, promote and assess a library liaison program; •Oversee Research Support Services which includes consultations, instruction and research assistance; •Oversee outreach and extended services; •Represent the library on university, state, and regional committees and consortia; •Serve on the Library Leadership team and assist in library planning, management, and innovation; •Contribute to the public services mission of the library by engaging with one or more other areas of the library as time permits.
Additional Info & Requirements
Required: •ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science or foreign equivalent. •Five years post-Masters experience in a health sciences, academic, or life sciences library. •Supervisory experience. •Knowledge of trends and practices in reference services and information access. •Experience providing advanced information services, including searching biomedical literature and full-text databases. •Excellent oral and written communication skills. •Strong customer service and enthusiastic public services orientation. •Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with diverse individuals and as part of a team. Preferred: •Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals is highly desirable. •3 years or more supervisory experience. •Experience managing professional staff. •Experience implementing a library liaison program and/or working as a library liaison. •Experience with a “single service desk”. •Experience with and/or knowledge of the Informationist or embedded library professional concept. •Knowledge of and interest in integrating emerging technologies into instructional and/or research services. •Knowledge of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) and EBM resources. •Experience developing instructional sessions and employing effective teaching technique. •Experience working with staff from a National Network/Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) Regional Medical Library and experience supporting National Library of Medicine (NLM) programs. •Knowledge and experience with open access issues.
