Collections and Connections: Engaging our Communities The award-winning Consortium Library at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is recruiting for the position of Head of Library Systems. We are looking for a motivated senior-level systems librarian to join us in designing and maintaining the technical infrastructure providing access to print, multimedia, and digital collections in support of the teaching and research interests of our communities. Located near the Chugach Mountains in Alaska's largest city (population 282,000), the Consortium Library serves both UAA with 19,000 students, and Alaska Pacific University (APU), a private institution with 500 students. A comprehensive metropolitan university, UAA consists of the Anchorage campus as well as five community campuses, and additional sites in rural communities and on military installations throughout Southcentral Alaska. UAA offers certificate, associate, baccalaureate, and graduate programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, and in the professional schools of education, engineering, and nursing. The Consortium Library Systems Department is committed to the delivery of a robust, responsive infrastructure that supports Library services. The department with five positions manages over 150 PCs for staff, public, and instructional use as well as several Linux and Windows servers for authentication, data storage, web applications, and other services. In addition, the library engages in numerous statewide programs and supports a number of remotely hosted services including OCLC’s ILLiad. The library’s SirsiDynix integrated library system is shared with the Anchorage Public Library and other regional libraries. The library will be implementing Serial Solutions’ metasearch and link resolver. RESPONSIBILITIES: The Head of Library Systems is responsible for the management, coordination, planning and implementation of the library’s various information systems and services. The Head of Library Systems is responsible for the effective delivery of the more than 190 licensed databases, 20,000 electronic journals and books and other web-based services. The Head of Library Systems oversees the technical support of the library’s local area network and office automation, authentication and security systems, hardware, software and networking configuration. This position identifies, evaluates, and recommends new technology/software applications to meet library needs and acts as the liaison to library system vendors and consultants. The Head of Library Systems is responsible for managing back up systems to archive and protect data, coordinates staff training in the use of systems, and creates documentation as necessary for system operations. The Head of Library Systems coordinates with the university’s Information Technology Services Department and relevant technology committees regarding issues affecting library resources and services and serves on library-wide and regional committees, task forces, and teams. This position may be assigned reference and subject liaison duties as part of the faculty workload. The Head of Library Systems reports to the Dean of the Consortium Library and serves on key library management and planning teams. This position is a tenure-track faculty appointment, and will be expected to meet all library faculty requirements for tenure and promotion. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: • Broad knowledge of database applications, operating systems, server administration, and library systems. • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to technical and non-technical groups EDUCATION REQUIRED: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent. LENGTH OF TIME AND TYPE OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: • Experience with managing a mission critical website • Project management experience • Supervisory experience • At least three years experience with administering library systems PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: • Progressively responsible management experience including supervision and budget planning • Experience working with multi-site library or library cooperative systems • Knowledge of practices and trends in library systems (e.g., open URL access, federated searching, and electronic resource management software) • Knowledge of information architecture as evidenced by at least one system implementation • Knowledge of and experience with developing user interfaces for web and database applications using tools like usability research, focus groups, heuristic testing, team reviews, and other tools of user experience development.
