Summary
Exeter Public Library seeks an innovative and community-focused individual to fill the position of Youth Services Librarian. Exeter is a rural town located in Washington County, Rhode Island. The library staff is composed of two full-time and five part-time employees. Responsible for programs and services for youths of all ages, the Youth Services Librarian also functions as a lead worker and assistant to the Library Director. Position Description
Reporting to the Library Director, the Youth Services Librarian’s primary responsibility is to provide high-quality services, materials, and programs to youths of all ages and their caregivers. They will also be required to assist in coordinating and supervising daily library operations, serving as assistant to the Library Director and managing the library in the latter’s absence. This position is approximately two thirds youth services and one third other responsibilities.
Primary Responsibilities
- Select for and maintain value-rich and well-used collections of children’s and teen materials.
- Provide quality library services to youths of all ages and their caregivers, including reference, reader’s advisory, and borrower services.
- Create and implement innovative and well-attended programs and initiatives for youths of all ages.
- Conduct community outreach efforts and work with local schools and organizations serving youths to build effective partnerships and collaborations.
- Stay current with library trends and practices and participate in professional activities that enhance competencies and benefit the library community.
- Assist with adult reference, borrower services, and other library operations as needed.
- Assist the Library Director with administrative and managerial responsibilities as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong desire to work with the community.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective demeanor and tact in all patron interactions and effective oral and written communications.
- Up-to-date knowledge of theories, tools, and trends in library services and programming for youths.
- Working knowledge of and comfort with technology, including the desire to learn new hardware and software that can be of use to the library and its patrons.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as necessary, maintaining open communication on an ongoing basis while staying goal- and mission-focused.
- Ability to work rotating and various work shifts, including evenings and weekends.
Qualifications
- MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution
- Experience working with youths required
- Patron or customer service experience strongly preferred
