Description

To serve as a member of a team who provides direct assistance and guidance to library users through reference and instructional services and who serve as bibliographers for specific academic departments, assisting in collection development and serving as liaisons to assigned departments.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide reference and research services
    • Work scheduled hours as backup to the Peer Research Consultants at the Knowledge Commons assisting patrons in identifying, accessing, and interpreting library and other information resources.
    • Instruct patrons in using resources, such as the library catalog, research databases and other resources.
    • Answer questions received in person or remotely, such as by phone, email, chat, or other methods.
    • Direct or refer users to more appropriate resources outside of the Library, as necessary.
    • Keep the Research guides updated in assigned subject areas and related areas.
    • Conduct database searches in appropriate areas to assist users with research or to answer reference questions.
    • Provide advanced reference and bibliographic service in assigned subject areas of specialization.
    • Schedule individual research appointments with faculty and students from assigned departments as needed.
    • Verify difficult Interlibrary Loan requests in assigned subject areas.
    • Attend Reference meetings and work cooperatively with department staff to identify and solve problems and the plan for improved services and resources.
    • Evaluate and make recommendations concerning the selection and implementation of new technologies to enhance reference services and instruction.
    • Evaluate and make recommendations concerning the selection of general and subject specific reference resources.
    • Promote Reference services and other library services to the University and community.
  • Act as bibliographer for specified academic departments; responsible for collection development/management for specified subject areas of the collection as well as the general reference collection.
    • Confer with faculty liaisons and faculty from assigned academic departments about information needs, existing resources, and departmental materials budgets and acquisition procedures.
    • Keep informed of the departments' curriculum and research interests and keep the departments informed of developments in the Library.
    • Promote faculty's usage of library resources and their role in promoting of library resources to their classes.
    • Encourage user education sessions for their classes and referrals to their subject librarian.
    • Stay abreast of publisher and vendor activities in assigned subject areas. Consult notifications and reviews of materials available for purchase and assist faculty in selecting materials within their budget, striving to ensure the collection adequately supports the curriculum.
    • Provide faculty with new book notifications and reviews as requested.
    • Create a desiderata file for materials for when supplemental monies become available for library materials.
    • Input selections into the Gobi system and submit order folders to Acquisitions.
    • Monitor departmental allocations, encumbrances, and expenditures, keeping faculty liaisons informed as needed.
    • Assist departments with accreditation reports by reviewing the existing collection in assigned subject areas and evaluating for quality. Collection analysis may also be requested by the Head of Collection Strategies.
    • Inspect damaged materials and recommend mending, binding or withdrawal.
    • Make recommendations for additions or withdrawals of material from the general reference collection.
    • Serve as a member of the Collection Development Committee, by attending and contributing at meetings.
    • Respond to special requests of the Collection Development Librarian and assist with special projects.
  • Participate in Library's information literacy instruction program
    • Instruct classes in research techniques as requested by academic departments in assigned subject areas of specialization.
    • Promote instructional services to assigned departments.
    • Conduct general library tours and specialized library presentations as requested.
    • Conduct library research presentations for distance students as requested.
    • Provide individual research appointments with students and faculty within assigned subject areas.
    • Develop and create subject guides to the collection as needed, focusing on assigned areas of expertise.
    • Keep current of recent developments in information literacy/instruction to recommend improvements to services.
  • Participate in other duties as assigned
    • Participate in library and university committees and initiatives, and other activities of professional interest or as assigned.
    • Liaison responsibilities to departmental libraries, units and special programs as assigned.
  • Participate in professional activities
    • Participate in meetings, conferences, workshops, or webinars, locally, regionally, and internationally as appropriate.
    • Accept opportunities to participate on committees, make presentations, and publish appropriate research or library accomplishments.
    • Keep current on the latest developments in the field of academic librarianship and related areas of interest through reading the professional literature and through electronic communication tools, such as discussion lists, blogs and other technologies and by attending training sessions and webinars on new technologies and resources.
    • Promote the library, its services, and collections to the University community and beyond.
    • Contribute to the advancement of the profession and status of the University and its Libraries. 

Required Competencies

Minimum Requirements

  • ALA-accredited master's degree
  • One year of library experience
  • Experience providing reference and research services.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

  • Background or experience in the sciences, engineering, or technology field/library

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$50,000 annually, exempt, full-time, benefited

Work Schedule/Start Date

Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:30pm some nights & weekends
