Job Description

SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:  The Web Services Librarian will be part of a creative and forward-looking team committed to improving online user experience. Under the direction of the Division Head for Library Systems & Digital Services, this librarian will redesign and develop the Claire T. Carney library’s websites. This includes work with systems such as Drupal, T4, WordPress, and Springshare’s LibGuides. The librarian will lead the library’s usability efforts and will adapt new and existing web tools to enhance the library's online interfaces. The Web Services Librarian will be responsible for creating documentation, soliciting input from library colleagues, and collaborating with other campus web developers.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Designs, develops, and maintains the library’s web presence.
  • Develops and oversees an overall content strategy based on user needs and stakeholder objectives.
  • Applies an in-depth understanding of library patron needs when designing, developing, and modifying library interfaces.
  • Assesses and improves current content and develop best practices for creating high-quality and accessible content.
  • Designs and conducts usability testing of all user interfaces and develops related guidelines and assessment strategies.
  • Follows standards and best practices for web accessibility.
  • Oversees and supports the design/development of LibGuides.
  • Explores, recommends, and adopts standard and emerging tools, techniques, methods, and applications to deliver a robust and reliable online experience for all library users.
  • Develops images and graphics for use in library supported platforms and systems.
  • Documents workflows and standards related to all aspects of the library’s web presence and services including related applications.
  • Performs security reviews, code and system updates, and backup and recovery processes.
  • Serves on library and university committees, groups, and teams.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution of higher education or equivalent

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in the design, development, and management of web interfaces
  • Experience with web design utilizing HTML, CSS, and scripting languages.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

  • Working knowledge of relevant coding languages
  • Knowledge of web accessibility standards
  • Ability and willingness to develop workflows and standards related to all aspects of the library’s web presence and services including related applications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Possesses an understanding of, and a commitment to, usability testing and ongoing assessment of web interfaces.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a team environment, working both independently and collaboratively as appropriate.
  • Demonstrated initiative and proven ability to learn new technologies and adapt to changes in the profession.
  • Understanding of library services and technologies in an academic environment.
  • Strong service orientation and awareness of end user needs as related to library online services and technologies.
  • Proven ability and willingness to share expertise with colleagues and to articulate technology strategy to non-technical staff and patrons.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication, including the ability to develop written project documentation, process procedures, reports, etc.
  • Must be available to respond to occasional situations and systems maintenance work that will occur during weekends or evenings.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience developing and managing academic websites, including managing stakeholders’ expectations.
  • Working knowledge of SQL.
  • Experience in an academic library setting.
  • Experience with content management systems, especially Drupal and/or Terminalfour.
  • Experience working in a Linux environment.
