Job Description

The West Warwick Public Library, finalist for the 2021 National Medal, is seeking a creative, dynamic individual for the position of Adult Services Assistant. The ideal candidate is flexible, creative, forward-thinking, and passionate about serving the community in new and innovative ways. The Adult Services Assistant works in the reference department and assists the Head of Adult Services and the Adult Services Librarian in the daily operations of the department including customer service and information inquiries, collection organization and management, and technology assistance. This is a part time, 19 hours per week position that requires the ability to work Mondays 1-9, Tuesdays 4-9, Thursdays alternating between 9-5 and 1-5, and alternating Saturdays 9-1. Key responsibilities:

  • Provides basic reference and reader’s advisory assistance in-person and by telephone to the public. Refers questions and inquiries of a research nature to the Head of Adult Services or Adult Services Librarian. 
  • Answers directional inquires; locates and retrieves requested materials.
  • Determines availability of materials by using the online catalog
  • Assists patrons in locating material and using the online catalog, databases, Internet, and other relevant resources.
  • Assists the public with self-service resources including online holds, e-commerce, photocopiers, printers, computers, and software applications.
  • Attempts basic troubleshooting of library hardware, software, printers, and copiers before contacting the Technology Coordinator or requesting outside assistance.
  • Maintains files and indexes. 
  • Prepares new books for placement on shelves. 
  • Shelves books and other department materials. 
  • Repairs and cleans books. 
  • Performs tasks associated with the accession and deletion of periodicals. Physically maintains the periodical collection
  • Responsible for various duties designed to keep the collection neatly organized and the department well-ordered. 
  • May teach classes or run programs if experience and knowledge is adequate.
  • Works at other public service desks as needed. 
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic library mission and functions.
  • Ability and interest in working with people and diverse populations.
  • Ability to set priorities among tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and self-manage time.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new procedures. 
  • Skill at working quickly and accurately.
  • Proficient in working with computers and using the Internet.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and the Google Suite.
  • Familiarity with social media including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Working Requirements

  • Library policies and procedures must be observed and followed.
  • Has access to confidential information and will maintain patron and staff confidentiality.
  • Ability to stand and use computer workstations for extended periods of time.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Familiarity working with computers.
  • Experience working with the public.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Clerical skills.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Intellectual curiosity and interest in a wide range of topics.
  • Ability to concentrate and focus on tasks.
  • Previous experience at any level in a public library.
  • Knowledge of creative writing, editing, table-top RPGS, arts and crafts, or graphic design is a plus.

Salary

  • Starting hourly rate: $12.25
