JOB SUMMARY
The Circulation Assistant staffs the circulation desk during library operating hours under the direction of the Archivist and Special Collections Librarian. This position is for 4 days a week, for a total of 22 hours a week, with additional days possible as needed. Duties include welcoming members and visitors, providing front-line patron assistance, circulating materials to members and other authorized borrowers, assisting in shelving of books and periodicals, and answering incoming calls and directing patron queries to appropriate staff for resolution. The Circulation Assistant will also assist other library staff with projects related to the operation of the library as assigned, such as checking in new periodicals, deaccessioning weeded materials, printing new labels, etc.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
Circulating materials to patrons using the integrated library system
Providing assistance locating books in the catalog and/or in the physical space
Receiving payment from visitors and new and renewing members
Assisting in the re-shelving of books and periodicals
Providing information about the library’s operation, membership opportunities, and history for visitors and members
Resolving patron concerns
Performing other library duties as assigned
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of general library practices and procedures, and specific knowledge in the areas of circulation desk operations
Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, membership and the general public
Ability to learn new computer systems and troubleshoot technical issues
