Job Description
NATURE OF WORK
This is paraprofessional library work assisting the Adult Services and Youth Services Librarians in providing reader’s advisory and reference services within the library. Position requires willingness to work at all City Library facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides staff coverage and excellent customer service for the reader’s advisory and/or youth services desks. Makes recommendations to patrons searching for titles to read, helps students with assignments, aids consumers with topic searches, directs patrons to other areas of the library, helps patrons fill out purchase requests and interlibrary loan requests. Assists Library Staff in weeding, mending, and ordering of books and materials. May be asked to present story times for children. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructs patrons on the use of electronic resources through informal situations. May assist in creating bibliographies, bulletin boards, library promotions, and book displays. Leads tours of the library facilities. Supervises volunteers when other Library Staff is not available.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Must have and maintain a working knowledge of nonfiction titles as well as popular authors and titles within a wide range of genre categories in fiction. Must demonstrate a working knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System. Knowledge of the Library of Congress (LC) system is desirable. Must be skilled in computer searching by title, author, and subject. A working knowledge of the Horizon system is preferred. Must demonstrate strong customer service skills and enjoy working with a wide variety of people. Must be able to juggle many tasks effectively in a busy environment. Must possess creative thinking skills and good oral and written communication skills. Must be knowledgeable of basic library procedures, methods and techniques. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City of Westminster and Front Range Community College co-workers, supervisors, and patrons.
MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT
This position requires the use of computers, software and databases including on-line searching. Other equipment includes, but is not limited to telephones, photocopiers, microform equipment, fax machines, and various electronic and audiovisual equipment such as televisions, VCRs, DVD players, and video projectors.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position involves bending, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and sitting. Must be able to reach high and low shelves to retrieve books and other materials and equipment. Must be able to transport books and materials, audiovisual, and other equipment to various locations. Must be able to reach high and low shelves to retrieve books and other materials and equipment. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and transport boxes of books, materials, audiovisual equipment, and other equipment to various locations. Must have ability to push a cart of up to 100 pounds.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND FORMAL TRAINING
Graduation from a four-year college or university is required. Two years experience working with adults, young adults, or children in a library, school, day care, preschool, or similar public service environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. Experience in readers advisory, reference, or general library experience is preferred.
OTHER NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS
Successful candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment substance screen prior to employment. Background investigations may be done prior to employment.
