Technical Assistant – Technical & Circulation Services

A. PURPOSE OF POSITION:
This position is responsible for cataloging and classifying all formats of library materials. The successful candidate will assist in the maintenance of the library’s integrated library system and other library technology and technical and circulation services functions, as well as provide support and back-up to department clerical staff. Technical proficiency and the ability to work independently are essential.

No supervisory duties.
D. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
· Catalogs and classifies all formats of library materials
· Receives library shipments and leased materials
· Assists in maintaining an up-to-date database of library holdings
· Implements software enhancements and assists in training staff in same
· Troubleshoots problems with ILS (Integrated Library System)
· Provides technical support and assists in staff technology training
· Keeps statistics for internal library usage and state-wide reporting
· Creates reports from ILS
· Other duties as assigned

E. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (Knowledge, Skill & Ability)
Knowledge of general library principles, organization and operations.
Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with current cataloging principles and practices including descriptive cataloging, subject analysis, subject headings, classification systems and creation of MARC records.
Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with maintaining and troubleshooting computer hardware and software.
F. EDUCATION & TRAINING:
Associate degree in library technology or bachelor’s degree, and 3 years of public library experience in technical services, or equivalent combination of related experience and training.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, sit, stand, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. The employee is occasionally required to crawl. Employee must be able to physically handle books and other library materials, and move rapidly and frequently throughout the building. The employee must often lift up to 25 pounds and must be able to push loaded book carts and book bins of varying weights. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision preferred, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The dexterity necessary to utilize a computer keyboard on a regular basis is essential.
Sick time accrual. Eligible for increase after one year of employment. No other benefits or PTO provided.
