Job Description
The Library Assistant provides customer service and clerical work related to checking in/out library materials, registering patron, collecting fees and fines, holding books, and updating the patron database. Assists patrons in the operation of Library equipment and provides general Library direction. Checks books and materials in and out using a computerized system. Processes patron applications, fines, notices, and telephone renewals. Maintains patron database and circulation records on the computer. Responds to customer needs. Instructs and assists patrons in proper care of Library materials and operation of Library computer and other equipment. Assists patrons with directional questions. Performs reception duties for the department. Performs Library opening and closing procedures. Sets up circulation desk for daily activities. Records and balances daily receipts at end of day. Handles holds for patrons. Calls patron when “hold” is available. Maintains supply inventory for work area. Collects materials for Home Services patrons and contacts volunteers to pick up and deliver these items. Backs up Library Page when needed. Performs other duties as assigned and required.
Additional Info & Requirements
Candidates must be able to work the following schedule (not flexible): Saturdays from 12:30pm-5:15pm and Sundays from 12pm-5:30pm.Requires High School education or GED. Also requires customer service experience. Preference given to candidates with library experience. Must have basic knowledge of library operations and the Dewey Decimal System. Strong customer service skills required to assist library patrons and work in a team-oriented environment. Must possess basic computer skills to use library database for circulation procedures and to print library cards. Basic mathematical skills needed to complete a daily cash report and to collect patrons’ fines and fees. An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted.
