Director/CEO – Worthington Libraries (OH)

The Worthington Libraries (OH) Board of Trustees seeks a visionary leader, consensus builder, and strong library advocate as its next Director/CEO. As one of only six libraries in the country to have received the Library Journal 5-Star Award every year since 2007, Worthington Libraries is committed to providing excellent service and resources to a population of 60,000 residents out of three physical locations and its website, worthingtonlibraries.org.

The 2007 National Library of the Year, Worthington Libraries is governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees appointed by the Worthington School District Board of Education, has 142 FTE, and a $15 million budget generated from the Ohio Public Library Fund and two local permanent property tax levies totaling 4.8 mills.

Known for its exemplary customer service, Worthington Libraries sets the standard for how a modern library can serve its community. Key initiatives include assisting the library in its transition to a union environment; building an actively anti-racist library; fostering a positive work culture; and defending intellectual freedom.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to creating and articulating a clear and exciting vision for the future of the library to all library stakeholders; providing visionary, strategic, and transparent leadership to all library stakeholders; developing and supporting all efforts to advance the library’s mission and building community support for the library’s collection, services, and programs; ensuring the library complies with all applicable laws; recommending and implementing library policies; serving as Deputy Fiscal Officer of the Board of Trustees; supporting the professional development of all staff and seeking to build a diverse workforce; negotiating the labor contract with Worthington Public Libraries United; and fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for staff and patrons.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years leading an organization are required. A master’s degree in business administration, public administration, or library science–from an ALA-accredited school–and a minimum of three (3) years of experience supervising a system-wide department or branch library, in a public library are preferred. Experience working with unions is also preferred. The ideal candidate will understand the nuances of the modern workplace, be an active listener and effective communicator, strengthen relationships inside and outside the organization, work closely with the Board of the Friends Foundation of Worthington Libraries; and serve as a trustworthy source of leadership and inspiration.
