The Millicent Library is seeking a part-time Library Assistant. The position divides time between circulation and youth services duties. These duties are varied ranging from staffing the circulation desk, assisting patrons with circulation related activities, assisting with story times for infants and children, youth programming, and other general library services.
Position is 19 hours/week, must be able to work evenings and Saturdays.
Essential Functions
Operates automated library system to perform routine circulation tasks such as checking in or out library materials, collecting fines, and issuing patron cards
Assists patrons in locating and requesting materials from other libraries
Assists library users in the use of reference material and library equipment such computers, tablets, printers, photocopiers, and other technology
May contribute to library social media and other outreach activities
Assists Youth Services Librarian with programing and events, maintenance of collections, and other activities
Monitors library email accounts and social media, and responds accordingly
Completes and submits information for interlibrary loan requests for use by circulation administrators
Retrieves library materials from public and non-public stack areas for library users; notifies patrons of materials on hold
Prepares materials returned from or to be returned to other library agencies
May participate in presentations, programing, or other engagement activities
Develops and maintains effective working relationships
Works independently and as part of a team
Maintains patron confidentiality
Refers library users requiring specialized library assistance to the appropriate staff member
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
Excellent problem-solving, time management, and public communication skills
Knowledge of library-related policies and procedures, including automated circulation systems and information technology
Ability to communicate complex information by phone, electronically, or in person in a one-to-one or group setting
Knowledge of library operations, principles, theories, and concepts of library services
Proficiency in current and emerging technologies
Experience in using social media
Flexibility in prioritizing projects
Analyze complex problems and evaluate alternatives/creative solutions
Work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends
Previous library circulation and youth services experience preferred
