The City of Ashland is located at the "Top of Wisconsin" on the Lake Superior shoreline, along Chequamegon (She-Wa-me-gon) Bay. The population is currently estimated at 8,795. To the east of Ashland is the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians. Major services and retail shopping facilities within the city accommodate most daily requirements. Major regional/national retailers include Pamida, Walmart, County Market, Hallmark, Ace Hardware, Sears, JC Penney, and Moccasin Trails IGA. Major employers in the area include Bretting Manufacturing, Larson-Juhl, Memorial Medical Center, School District of Ashland, Northland College, St. Mary's Duluth Clinic, Chequamegon Clinic, Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College and Bad River Casino. The city of Ashland has a rich history. Many historic buildings and homes still stand. The logging industry, railroad, shipping and fur trade shaped the city into what it is today. One of the remaining historic landmarks is an oredock, used for shipping coal. It is the largest concrete structure of its kind. The downtown area has a beautiful and unique mural walk which depicts the history and people of the community. The Lake Superior region offers an abundance of scenic beauty and outdoor recreation pleasure, four seasons a year. Residents of the area can participate in many outdoor activities such as exploring the woods, lakes and rivers of the 850,000 acre Chequamegon National Forest, fishing, camping, boating, hiking, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. The Chequamegon Bay area also offers a variety of cultural activities including a local community theater, the Chequamegon Symphony Orchestra, the Ashland City Band and other venues for local talent.
