Reporting directly to the Mayor of the City of Springfield, Illinois, the Director serves as the administrative head of Springfield’s public library. Plans, organizes, directs, evaluates and reviews the library's services, resources, programs and staff in support of strategic goals and objectives. Fosters purposeful and meaningful connections with the community, staff, and City of Springfield to realize the library’s mission and vision.
- Responsible for leading a management and administrative staff of 12 people.
- Develops and presents the annual Library operating budget for City Council approval. Ensures maximum resource utilization, budget management and maintenance to put the Library in a positive, productive and sustainable financial situation.
- Ensures the success and sustainability of library programs, services, and collections using qualitative and quantitative data and refines overall strategy as needed.
- Oversees library personnel; assists in recruitment, selection and retention of qualified candidates for library vacancies. Plans for any reorganization, expansion, or reduction of staff and services. Coaches, develops and supports members of the leadership team. Evaluates day-to-day activities and performance of library personnel either directly or through subordinate supervisors. Works in conjunction with Union leadership and Human Resources in matters pertaining to bargaining unit personnel.
- Builds and maintains collaborative, positive, and effective working relationships with the Office of Mayor, City Council, community leaders, and other municipal departments. Maintains visibility and presence in the library and the community as well as working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders at all levels.
- Represents the Library in the community. Advocates for the Library and establishes buy-in for projects, programs, and initiatives aimed at supporting the Library's strategic goals.
- Maintains strong relationships with the Board of Trustees, Lincoln Library Alliance, and Lincoln Library Foundation. Attends board meetings for all three entities, and maintains regular and ongoing communication to each.
Requirements
Requires a Master's Degree in Library Science, as well as a minimum of three or more years of Library administration and supervisory experience, in addition to five or more years of increasingly responsible experience in a library setting.
