Overview

The Teaching and Learning, Department Head leads the Auraria Library’s efforts in planning, implementing, and managing information literacy instruction and research services. This position provides leadership for all issues related to the library’s educational and research roles such as student learning and research, online education, scholarly communication, curriculum planning, research consultations, student learning assessment, and research recognition and promotion. In response to strategic campus shifts toward hybrid modalities and a new emphasis on research, the Department Head will build and advocate for a framework that advances the library’s teaching and research missions across campus.

This position will lead a department of nine faculty, two staff, and four to six student assistants. The Department Head is an active member of the public services leadership group, manages the library’s research help services, and participates in the development and evaluation of cross-departmental public services.  The successful candidate is a dynamic, student-focused educator with demonstrated leadership skills who continually transforms and assesses education and research services by gathering and using quantitative and qualitative data to inform planning while actively monitoring the campus curriculum and scholarship.

As a Library faculty member, the librarian participates on Library and campus-wide committees and in CU Denver faculty governance.

Located in downtown Denver, Colorado, the Auraria Campus is home to three institutions of higher education – University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Community College of Denver. Both MSU Denver and CCD are Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI). CU Denver is an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving institution (AANAPISI) and is working toward its HSI status.  The Auraria Library serves the campus’ over 35,000 students, the majority of whom are from the first-generation in their family to enroll in higher education. Leads nine faculty, two staff, and four to six student assistants with direct supervision of 2-4 faculty. 

Job Duties

Leadership in Instruction and Research Support

·      Leads a department of librarians responsible for implementing instructional services and research support, including workload distribution, goal setting, and performance evaluation.

·      Provides guidance and expertise to help the department continue to build and implement a programmatic instruction plan for the campus’s academic programs, including face-to-face and virtual modes of delivery.

·      Collaborates with Research Unit to develop a suite of research support services to meet the needs of scholarly research being conducted on campus.

·      Leads coordination with campus partners to integrate instructional services throughout campus programs, including integration into the three campus learning management systems.

·      Collaborates with departmental faculty and staff to coordinate the production, revision, and assessment of digital learning objects.

·      Serves on a web content oversight team and keeps information about research and instruction services up to date.

·      Oversees training and professional development opportunities for the department’s faculty and staff on all aspects of library instruction, including theory, pedagogy, best practices, and available resources.

·      Recommends acquisition of tools/resources (e.g., software/hardware) to support education and research support, and coordinates necessary training of those tools/resources.

·      Manages the Library’s research user service points, including service modalities, staffing accountability, assessment, and training.

·      Collaborates with Special and Digital Collections and technical experts in the department to guide the library’s institutional repository work.

Organizational Leadership and Campus Partnerships

·      Coordinates department collaboration with campus curriculum and instruction committees, First-Year Experience offices, educational technology offices, and other campus departments/units and on Library committees and taskforces

·      Communicates with campus faculty development centers and other campus and external partners to create programming and services to support the teaching missions of the three institutions.

·      Leads the effort for the Library to be recognized across campus as an active contributor to student, faculty, and staff learning.

·      Communicates with clarity and transparency with internal and external stakeholders.

·      Actively promotes an environment of continual improvement by engaging in ongoing learning, information sharing, and professional development as a member of the Auraria Library learning organization.

Other

·      Collaborates with the Head of Access and User Services, Head of Information Technology and Web Services, Head of Collection Development and Strategies and Head of Discovery Systems and Metadata to plan, develop, and implement cross-departmental public services with the aim of excellent over-all user experience.

·      Collaborates with other library units and Teams to develop services as needed.

·      Other duties as assigned.

Leadership and Service

·      Participates on Library and campus-wide committees and CU Denver faculty governance.

·      Serves on the Service Integration Team that oversees library service points.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

·      Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or equivalent advanced degree, from an accredited university or college.

·      Experience in instruction, curriculum, and pedagogy in an academic or research library.

·      Supervisory experience in an academic or research library.

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

·      Experience employing quantitative and/or qualitative research methodologies for programmatic student learning assessment.

·      Experience leading or developing research support services in an academic or research library.

·      Demonstrated experience working successfully with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·      Knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends in information literacy instruction, including inclusive pedagogical practices, learning technologies, and student learning assessment.

·      Knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends in library research support services, including data support and use tools, scholarly publishing, and institutional repositories.

·      Ability to lead and manage inter-departmental teams.

·      Ability to work well both independently and in a collaborative environment and to contribute to professional service.

·      Ability to create responsive and sustainable instruction and research support programs.

·      Demonstrated experience building working relationships and collaborations with academic programs and/or faculty at an institution of higher education.

·      Knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends that affect academic libraries and higher education.

·      Demonstrated commitment to professional activity/service, especially in instruction, student learning, or research services.

·      Demonstrated interpersonal communication and presentation skills.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $74,000 to $78,000.  

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is NOT eligible for overtime compensation.
