POSITION DESCRIPTION The Research and Engagement Services Librarian is responsible for managing a balanced portfolio of four key activities in support of the programs of the Arts and Sciences focused on disciplines in the Humanities, with an emphasis on English and other disciplines as needed: (1) collection management, (2) instruction, (3) research, and scholarship, and (4) engagement.
The Kelvin Smith Library is the knowledge and creativity commons of Case Western Reserve University and part of a library system with over three million titles in print and digital formats. KSL is home to the University Archives and Special Collections and manuscripts consisting of over 17,000 linear feet, the Kulas Music Collection, and the Freedman Center for Digital Scholarship which advances research by partnering with scholars and students to explore and develop new forms of scholarship. KSL is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), OhioLINK, the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), HathiTrust, and the Center for Research Libraries. In 2019 KSL was the recipient of the ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award. KSL affiliate libraries include the Cleveland Institute of Art Library, the Cleveland Institute of Music Robinson Music Library, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library, and a cooperative relationship with the Western Reserve Historical Society Research Library.
QUALIFICATIONS The initial rank of the research and engagement librarian will be based upon qualifications and experience; professional knowledge, abilities, and skills; contributions to the profession through service and scholarly endeavors; and professional qualities consistent with university and library values.
Experience: 1 to 3 years of experience. Recent graduates and early career librarians are encouraged to apply.
Education: Master's degree in Library Science or relevant area.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide expertise and partner in instruction and research; apply best practices, advanced techniques, technologies, and good judgment; and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders. Possess a significant level of expertise within library science; maintain and continue to increase knowledge of relevant emerging issues and trends and the role of the library in higher education. Acknowledge and articulate organizational positioning and strategic alignment with the university. Knowledgeable and experience with technology standards used in digital humanities work such as platforms (e.g., Scalar, Omeka, and/or other resources). Project management skills and experience in overseeing technology-based projects (25%)
- Coordinate collection management, evaluate, and select digital and print resources. Develop and implement collection policies; use qualitative and quantitative evaluation in the selection of resources that support and enhance resources that are consistent with university programs and the library's strategic goals, and effectively manage annual budget allocations. (15%)
- Develop and deliver information and digital fluency models and output measures, research skills or other relevant areas partnering with faculty to provide a high-quality instructional experience using a variety of techniques and formats. (15%)
- Provide research consultation and guidance for faculty and students at each step of the research cycle as appropriate to discover, create, and manage print and digital information resources effectively. Keep abreast of developments in relevant research and scholarly communication and develop formal and informal methods of engagement that highlight the library's role in promoting and furthering research. (15%)
- Meet regularly with faculty to learn about their research and teaching needs. Regularly promote library resources and services, develop strategies and materials to promote curricular and academic goals, and conduct and analyze user research through surveys, focus groups, etc. to ascertain the level of community satisfaction with library services. Educate, engage, and market to faculty and students traditional and emerging forms of scholarship and related technology and forge new collaborations and relationships that extend the libraries' capacity. (15%)
- Contribute to the library, the institution, and the profession through sustained and progressive scholarship, creative expression, and service at the state, regional, or national level. (8%)
- Contribute to the maintenance of a work culture of inclusion, diversity, equity and belonging. (6%)
SALARY This position is a L2 with a minimum of $57,200. The salary will be offered to commensurate with qualifications and experience.
