Title: Stacks Management Assistant

Schedule:
- Mon-Fri, 9am – 5pm
- Some limited early evening hours (Fri. To 7pm) and/or Tue-Sat (daytime) schedule hours may be needed (but not initially).
Pay Rate: $17.50 per hour

Description:
This full-time position (37.5 hours per week) will be responsible for performing and coordinating Stacks Management retrieval, reshelving and return processing of Library materials, supervising student employees in collaboration with co-workers in the W. E. B. Du Bois Library at UMass-Amherst and providing back-up and on-call patron service as needed.
Supervision received:
- This position reports to the Manager of Circulation Services.
Supervision exercised:
- Provide student staff supervision in Stacks Management and Access Services in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library as needed in collaboration with other Library staff.
Responsibilities:
- Perform, coordinate and supervise the retrieval and routing of patron requested materials from the Du Bois Library’s stacks collections.
- Process, sort, re-shelve and distribute returned and newly acquired materials to appropriate locations while supervising student employees in collaboration with co-workers.
- Clear indoor and outdoor patron book drops, drive Library van on campus to transport library returned items from remote book drop.
- Provide backup and on-call assistance to Library patrons at the Du Bois Library’s Learning Commons Service Point as needed.
- Provide end-of-shift updates to the department manager and staff colleagues on a daily basis.
- Assist the Library staff and patrons in the event of an emergency evacuation.
Qualifications:
- Ability to supervise student staff.
- Working knowledge of methods, materials, and technologies used in libraries. Familiarity with Library of Congress call # classification. Knowledge of Library Service Platform systems preferred.
- Ability to lift, shelve and move books, bend down to carry up to 30lbs of books.
- Customer service experience is strongly preferred.
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
- Supervisory experience involving training, oversight, and assignment of work in a fast-paced, technology-intensive service setting.
- Prior experience in a position requiring excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Experience using word processing, spreadsheet, email, chat, and web-based software applications.
- Requires valid Mass driver's license.
