The Children's Services Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of paraprofessional children’s services staff, promoting, evaluating, and leading programs at two branches and in the community, and assisting in collection maintenance.
Essential Functions
1. Supervision (40%) Provides day to day direction to paraprofessional children’s services staff. Assists in interviewing, hiring, training, delegating tasks, and evaluating staff. Communicates policies and procedures and helps make decisions to establish, monitor, and enforce practices and procedures. Contributes to the professional development of staff by giving routine feedback, mentoring, and providing educational opportunities via webinars and conference attendance. Holds regular department staff meetings.
2. Programming (20%) Evaluates program proposals; serves as coordinator, collaborator, and facilitator with programming staff when conducting large children’s services events. Will be responsible for developing, facilitating, and assessing several programs and events.
3. Collections (10%) Assists in the maintenance of children’s collections, including print materials, non-print materials, and other items in the children’s collection. Works closely with collection development librarians to promote collection through a variety of channels.
4. Communication (20%) Assists in the creation and evaluation of print and online marketing material to promote
children’s services programs, events, and services. Assists with content creation for informational or
publicity purposes; adheres to all branding guidelines and uses strong communication skills to publicize
department offerings.
5. Schedules and Calendars (10%) May contribute to the following administrative tasks: reserving library rooms,
creating and sending calendar invites, and canceling or rescheduling events online. Additionally, may
collaborate on program and event calendar creation, both print and online. 10%
6. Other duties as assigned.
Incumbents may be required to work nights and/or weekends and travel to external events.
Autonomy
Guidelines and results of work are defined. Determines how to accomplish tasks and provides direct supervision to others.
Supervisory Responsibility
Full supervision of para-professionals including hiring and firing recommendations and performance management responsibilities.
Education and Experience Required
Requires a two-year college degree or equivalent coursework and/or an equivalent amount of library experience
Two or more years of experience in a public library setting.
One or more years of supervisory experience for staff within a library system, customer service and/or non-profit organization.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
● Proven ability to oversee / assist staff in an effective way.
● Proven ability to build children’s print and non-print collections.
● Knowledge of current trends in library services as it relates to programming and collection development.
● Excellent oral and written communication skills.
● Willingness to establish relationships with a desire to meet and serve the public.
● Excellent organizational skills with a high degree of attention to detail.
● Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
● Demonstrated ability to think analytically, exercise initiative, and act in the best interest of the library.
● Digital literacy.
● Effective in leading and working with a wide range of constituencies.
● Must be a team player.
Work Environment
Position requires being up and moving around the Library and at times stationary at workstation. The job requires stooping, bending, squatting, stretching. Occasional lifting, such as three or four reams of paper, four or five books, or other materials (up to 25 pounds) may be required. Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (with keyboard, shelving), eye-hand coordination, data entry and computer use for accessing information. Should be conscious of appropriate ergonomics and work station setup.
