Position Information
This person manages a team of professional and support staff at the Central branch along with managing the youth services programming for all Aurora Public Library branches.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Is responsible for providing leadership and supervising youth services staff at the Central library including scheduling, training, conducting performance evaluations, and implementing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures.
- Plans, promotes, oversees, and implements youth programs including conducting outreach to community groups and organizations for promotion of library services.
- Manages general youth services and programming system wide.
- Acts as “Person-In-Charge” on a rotating basis with added authority to manage customer issues and other situations.
- Provides and implements current policy and procedure, as well as making recommendations for future changes.
- Provides friendly, efficient, and professional service to patrons and responds to difficult and complex customer service issues.
- Works with staff to create and implement goals that support the library’s Annual Plan and Strategic Plan. Reviews and analyzes data to reach library output goals, accountable for achieving location’s key results.
- Administering and tracking budgets and expenditures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
- Master’s degree in library science.
Experience:
- At least three (3) years of professional library experience.
- At least one (1) year of lead or supervisor experience.
- At least two (2) years youth services library experience.
Knowledge:
- Principles, organization, and practices of library service.
- Background in specialized children’s and youth resource materials.
- Library classification systems (Dewey, Library of Congress).
- Integrated Library Systems (Sierra/Innovative).
- Routine software/computer systems including the internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets, and inventory/customer transaction systems.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Essential Personnel:
- When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
Physical Demands:
- Light physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 20 pounds.
- Frequent pushing, pulling, and climbing.
- Considerable walking and standing.
- Clear vision for reading and interpreting reports, data analysis and preparation.
- Frequent hand/eye coordination for operation of computer and other office equipment.
- Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and customers.
Work Environment:
- Works primarily in clean, comfortable environment with shared workstations and equipment
- Shift work to include days, nights, working weekends and occasional holidays. Must be willing to work at least one closing shift.
Equipment Used:
- Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel and menu driven databases as a part of the library automated systems.
- This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
