Job Description

A treasure nestled in the magnificent setting of the Texas Hill Country, Boerne (pronounced “Bernie”) is only minutes north of San Antonio, via Interstate 10. Boerne is home to over 22,000 and covers just over 12.2 square miles. It is the only incorporated municipality in Kendall County, which has a population of over 50,000.  Boerne, which is the county seat, is a charming, family-friendly community with a rich cultural history and thriving local economy. Residents of Boerne enjoy great connectivity, abundant cultural and entertainment amenities, and stellar schools.

The City of Boerne’s Patrick Heath Public Library cultivates a love of reading, enriches lives through lifelong learning and cultural exploration, and provides a welcoming space for people to engage and connect. With an annual departmental budget of just over $2.01 million and a team of 18 employees, 10 full time and 8 part time, the 30,250 square foot library, opened in 2011, offers a variety of core services to residents and customers, including entertaining and educational programming and outreach for all ages; access to materials and information through books, early literacy, interlibrary loan, digital materials, local and family history materials, and reader’s advisory; public and study spaces; technology and business services, such as notary services, Wi-Fi throughout the building, test proctoring, career resources, wireless hotspots for checkout, computers, printing, scanning, etc.; and resources for underserved populations, including non-English speakers, the elderly, food insecure, and teens. The library also includes a 250 seat outdoor amphitheater.

Under the direction of the City Manager’s office, the Library Director is responsible for providing a dynamic, innovative space that provides access to information and actively engages and inspires every member of Boerne’s diverse community. Boerne enjoys a state-of-the-art library, and the incoming Library Director will join a team of gifted and committed public servants. The City is seeking an experienced and innovative public servant who thrives in an ever-changing industry and is excited to lead the Patrick Heath Public Library through continuous improvement. The right fit for this position is a strong leader with a proven ability to inspire and motivate their staff, build, and maintain relationships with elected and appointed officials, and develop a positive and desirable workplace culture. They should understand the retail business aspects of a public library and have experience managing a department budget, including long-range planning for the upkeep and maintenance of a library facility. They should also have experience managing events, as the City has an amphitheater to program.

This position requires a master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution and five or more years of progressively responsible experience in public service library management focused on innovation and customer service. Local government library experience is preferred. The selected candidate must also be bondable and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license.

The salary range for this position is $105,726 to $158,558, depending on qualifications and experience.
