Hire and supervise staff
Board of Trustees
- Prepare agenda and supporting materials for monthly board meetings
- Attend monthly board meetings
- Act as a professional and technical advisor to the library board of trustees on policy, finances, planning, library performance and laws affecting libraries
- Implement and interpret board policy to staff and the public
Administer the library budget
Manage revenue and seek donations and grants
Prepare and maintain required reports and statistics
Manage and maintain the physical facility, computer technology, and digital systems
The Collection
Develop the collection through acquisition and prepare it for use by patrons
Maintain the collection through organization processes and regular review procedures
Oversee circulation of materials
Patron Services
Assist patrons as needed
Develop a wide knowledge of books, internet, other materials, and services to judge usefulness and quality for patrons
Develop and maintain relationships with local schools and organizations to promote library programming and services
Oversee the development of balanced programming and activities for patrons of all ages
Professional Development
Attend library workshops, meetings, conventions, etc.
Keep informed of library developments and laws by reading current news, reports, etc.
Maintain current knowledge of public library services and trends through literature review and continuing education opportunities
Other Duties
Teach and model excellent customer service practices
Evaluate and plan for the future needs of the library with consideration to the library’s mission statement and policies
Maintain effective working relationships with board of trustees, city officials, staff, and patrons
Positively represent the library to the public through media, social media, and other publicity

- 2-3 years supervisory experience (preferred)
- 2–3 years of library experience or related field (preferred)
- State Library of Iowa Public Library Certification (must complete within 2 years of hire)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science or related field (required)
