Job Description

The State Librarian is responsible for managing the operations of the State Library, including two full-time librarians, in a way that enables the Department of State (Department) to achieve its mission, which is to serve Rhode Islanders by promoting transparent government, supporting businesses, and strengthening our democracy through a commitment to civic engagement, secure elections, and empowering voters.


The State Librarian is a hard-working individual who is dedicated to facilitating access to government information in a prompt and professional manner. The State Librarian has a passion for excellence and innovation, a desire to implement emerging technologies, and enthusiasm for collaboration and fostering strong relationships with the Department’s partners and constituents. The successful candidate will position the State Library as a leader in the field and will empower staff to bring innovative changes to meet Rhode Islanders’ government information needs where they are. The State Librarian will implement initiatives aligned with the Department’s strategic plan, including promoting civic engagement and civic literacy.

The Rhode Island General Laws assign various statutory duties to the State Librarian, most specifically RI General Law chapters 29-1, 29-2, and 29-7.
