Job Summary:

NATURE OF THE WORK

The Head of Education & Research leads a team of faculty and staff who develop and manage the library’s instructional programs, expert literature searching service, liaison program, consultation services, and the frontline library services including virtual reference.

SUPERVISION

The Head of Education & Research reports to the Deputy Director of the Library.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Head of Education & Research supervises faculty librarians and public services staff.

FACULTY STATUS

CU Anschutz Medical Campus Strauss Health Sciences Library faculty members serve as non-tenure-track faculty.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities in bold face are unique to this position; all others are duties performed by the entire department.

  • Train, supervise, and evaluate the work of departmental faculty and staff reports
  • Develop departmental strategic plans, create policies and procedures, set priorities and goals to meet the needs of primary users
  • Serve on the Library Leadership team
  • Manage creation, assessment, and maintenance of departmental web content (e.g., Drupal, LibGuides) including tutorials, guides, and handouts
  • Seek collaborative outreach opportunities and advocacy for the department across campus.
  • Lead collection and analysis of departmental statistics and assessment of services
  • Serve as the library liaison to a school, college, or academic unit, attending unit orientations, meetings, and events; and/or collaborate with faculty to embed library instruction, services, and resources into the curriculum and online learning environments; and/or conduct expert literature searches, providing guidance for researchers in the use of appropriate research management tools
  • Monitor trends in academic and health sciences reference, instruction, and literature searching services and supporting technologies
  • Support AskUs reference service requests from students, faculty and staff, both face-to-face and virtually.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group consultations, both face-to-face and via video conferencing software, on topics related to library resources and research management
  • Represent the library on library, campus, CU-system, or professional committees at the local, state, and/or national level

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Head of Education & Research is expected to assume personal responsibility for designing and implementing a plan for continuing professional development and to actively contribute to the development of health sciences librarianship through scholarly and service activities.

Work Location:Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:

Assistant Professor:

  • Master’s degree or higher from an ALA accredited library school, or international equivalent
  • At least 5-10 years post-Masters experience in a professional librarian position or equivalent

Associate Professor:

  • Master’s degree or higher from an ALA accredited library school, or international equivalent
  • At least 11 or more years post-Masters experience in a professional librarian position or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of supervisory experience in a library
  • At least 1 year experience in public services
  • Open-minded vision of team roles and commitment to coaching and leadership development
  • Experience working in a health sciences, academic, research, life sciences, related-field special library, or previous experience in a health profession
  • Experience managing complex projects
  • Experience implementing change with a diverse group of people
  • Experience developing workflows and teams to solve problems
  • Experience with evidence-based health care
  • Demonstrated evidence of flexibility, initiative, dependability, creativity, and the ability to work cooperatively in an evolving technological environment
  • Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP)

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Assistant Professor: $90,000 to $97,000

Associate Professor: $97,000 to $107,000

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
