General Summary
The Network Cataloger assists the Database Manager in maintaining the database and providing quality customer support to MVLC’s technical services staff. The position performs professional, hands-on cataloging duties, for both print and non-print collections. An awareness of cataloging standards/technology and best practices related to bibliographic control is vital to the position.
The Network Cataloger reports directly to the Database Manager for day-to-day tasks, under the overarching supervision of the Assistant Director for Consortium Services, who oversees the Technical Services Team.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Acquires MARC records from OCLC for editing and uploading into MVLC’s bibliographic database.
• Performs original cataloging of print, non-print, and emerging resources using a
bibliographic utility, such as OCLC, and the ILS.
• Supports the Database Manager in operations and workflow at Central Site.
• Assists the Database Manager and Assistant Director for Consortium Services with
recommendations on policies and procedures for MVLC’s technical services staff.
• Pinpoints areas for database clean-up and collaborates with the Database Manager as
assigned to maintain bibliographic database integrity.
• Works collaboratively with the Database Manager to execute special projects, as assigned by the Assistant Director for Consortium Services.
• Writes and assists with Central Site internal and ILS training documentation.
• Provides effective communications and quality customer service to member libraries.
• Troubleshoots cataloging issues for member library technical services staff.
• May provide training sessions for member library staff in cataloging and serials
• Responsible for assisting with Help Desk tickets related to technical services related issues
• Attends appropriate meetings.
• Maintains statistics.
• Performs other relevant duties as required.
Qualifications
• ALA accredited MLS
• Knowledge of current national cataloging standards
• Knowledge of cataloging and classification systems
• Experience with automated database use and management
• Two years public library cataloging experience
• Minimum of one year's experience with OCLC searching and editing
• Experience with MarcEdit desired
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Experience with training or instruction preferred
• Attention to detail
