Job Description

The Bozeman Public Library is seeking a dynamic leader with strong management skills who is flexible, fun, and embraces innovation. The ideal candidate will have a passion for finding creative ways to deliver library services that meet the evolving needs of the community. A primary role of this position is to oversee the Adult Programming and Outreach Department team in developing and implementing engaging programs and community outreach initiatives for the Bozeman Public Library. This includes managing our state-of-the-art Creative Labs, which feature a maker space and learning kitchen. This individual will supervise a team of creative and motivated library staff, fostering an environment of collaboration and innovation. Working closely with colleagues and the Assistant Library Director, the Adult Programming and Outreach Department Head will be instrumental in implementing Bozeman Public Library’s mission: to create opportunities that inspire curiosity, exploration, and connection. Currently, the Management Team is working on a two-year strategic plan, and this role will have a strong role in implementing the goals. The person in this position will also collaborate with a team on marketing for the library, including website development and social media strategies. Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates employees within the assigned department in order  to meet all determined departmental goals and objectives as required, including implementing employee training and staff development processes, developing priorities and assigning duties, scheduling staff and signing time sheets, and performing periodic performance appraisals;
  • Performs advanced reference, informational, and directional services, including providing instructions to patrons in the use of all technology resources including the library computer catalog, Internet resources, microform reader/ printer, fax, and copy machines in addition to explaining library rules, circulation policies, and procedures to patrons;
  • Coordinates network, hardware, software, and other technology related projects with City IT;
  • Makes recommendations for electronic equipment and software to be purchased;
  • Oversees development and maintenance of Library website, staff wiki, and other marketing and communication technology tools;
  • Makes recommendations for Department-related materials to be purchased by assessing the current library collection, including recording patron requests and/or reference questions for use in selecting collection materials, utilizing review journals and other sources to select new materials in various subjects, and writing procedural guidelines for selection of new materials;
  • Plans and conducts regular management staff meetings to gather data, inform, instruct, and address current and upcoming community, patron, and employee issues in addition to informing staff of new procedures, policies, equipment, and software;
  • Develops and implements library programming, events and outreach efforts;
  • May participate in Library and external community committees;
  • May represents the Library at Board and other related meetings;
  • Prepares and administers assigned departmental budget, including assisting with preparing annual library budget and Capital Improvement Program requests, identifying needs, researching and comparing costs, recommending purchases and suggesting budget allocations for various resources to the Assistant Library Director;
  • Promotes positive relations between the library and patrons, local businesses, local schools, community and civic organizations, and the general public, including performing public speeches in the community and actively seeking grants, gifts, and other new sources of funding for the library;
  • As assigned, responsible for ongoing maintenance of online catalog system, including maintaining security by creating and updating logins and passwords, and acting as the main contact for the computer system troubleshooting needs;
  • Participates on the management team, including providing key statistics, reporting workload indicators, overseeing the acquisition of all library materials, providing reports of the activities of the assigned departments, recommending changes or revisions in library policy, procedures, and goals, writing or rewriting procedures, recommending and justifying goals of Department to the administration, and enforcing existing policies and procedures;
  • Plans and implements programs designed to promote reading, library use, and other related goals;
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
  • Communicates with all related personnel in efforts to encourage, motivate, promote leadership,  and encourage teamwork in accomplishing set forth objectives;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizen and staff questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science; and
  • Considerable (5-7 years) progressively responsible experience in library operations including at least one year of supervisory experience; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Substantial knowledge of cataloging rules and standards as assigned;
  • Substantial knowledge or ability to quickly learn assigned areas of library network system;
  • Thorough knowledge of standard library functions, rules, policies, and procedures;
  • Thorough knowledge of library catalogs, indexes, reference materials, circulating and non-circulating collections, online databases, email, and audio-visual equipment;
  • Thorough knowledge of specific Department materials and resources;
  • Thorough knowledge of the Internet and other electronic sources;
  • Thorough knowledge of print and electronic reference resources,
  • Thorough knowledge of Interlibrary Loan procedures and policy as assigned;
  • Substantial knowledge of general issues and current events;
  • Substantial knowledge of current library trends and standards related to public libraries;
  • Substantial knowledge of community, State, and National resources;
  • Some knowledge of operational finance and budgeting;
  • Knowledge of and ability to plan and implement library programming and public outreach efforts;
