The JMRL Central Library Makerspace & Digital Media Lab in downtown Charlottesville is seeking creative and tech-savvy candidates excited by the idea of empowering people of all ages to learn new skills, build community, and develop their passions. As a Part-Time Makerspace Lab Support Staff, you will help patrons of various skill levels make the most of our lab’s resources, which include 3D printing and scanning, audio/video/sound editing, button making, computer-controlled cutting, laser cutting and engraving, sewing machines, and more.
While no specific experience is required, ideal candidates will be comfortable with makerspace tools, software, and machinery, or excited to learn. Regular responsibilities include welcoming new patrons and giving them tours of our space, chatting with them about projects they would like to make, helping them safely use tools, and connecting them to learning resources. Once fully trained on our equipment, you’ll get to teach the patrons what you know!
Candidates for this position must be detail-oriented, be able to understand and carry out oral and written directives, work well under pressure, be able to prioritize and multitask, and communicate well with fellow staff. Must be able to maintain good relations with the public and demonstrate courtesy and tact in all situations.
