The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is seeking a passionate, innovative, and strategic leader to serve as the Co-Director of the MBLWHOI Library, and the Director of Library Services at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. This pivotal role will provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for the MBLWHOI Library, aligning services with the evolving needs of the scientific community.
Mission
The MBLWHOI Library is dedicated to advancing scholarship and education in the Woods Hole Scientific Community through Library services, innovative research, collaborations, and informatics tools. The Library works collaboratively with partners around the world to provide access to scientific information for the creation of new knowledge through collections, resource sharing, preservation, and the development and implementation of new technologies. The MBLWHOI Library is internationally recognized as defining current trends and practices in marine information sciences and science informatics.
The Library is operated jointly by the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and provides information resource services to four affiliate organizations: the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center, the Sea Education Association (SEA), The Woodwell Climate Research Center (WCRC), and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) - Northeast Fisheries Science Center Woods Hole.
Functions & Duties
Cultivates a visible and active presence in Woods Hole and in the library, working on campus at least three days per week
Contributes to the profession through engagement with appropriate local, regional, and national organizations
Promotes a culture of continuous learning and personal development to build a high performing organization and to attract top talent
Recruits, develops, and evaluates a team of librarians, contributing to their professional growth, development, and retention and fosters an environment that values diversity and individuality
Manages day-to-day operations of the WHOI Data Library and Archives including contract negotiations and budgeting, managing personnel, overseeing physical space and collections
Serves as liaison to institution and laboratory committees; forges strong relationships and collaborations across the institutions, articulates program goals to external and internal constituencies, advocates on behalf of the library with stakeholders, communicating the value of library resources and services in supporting the broader institution mission, initiatives, and programs
Demonstrates excellent communication skills, foster trust and good relationships by working collaboratively and demonstrating integrity among co workers and with the larger community
Provides leadership and knowledge in scientific research data principles, tools, and practices including format migration, preservation, metadata, discovery, provenance, and data access

Works collaboratively with MBLWHOI Library co-director for the planning, development, and administration of the MBLWHOI Library and to advance the goals of the Library while responding to the opportunities and challenges of the future
Education & Experience

Masters Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent degree or experience
Demonstrated knowledge of biological-, environmental-, or physical sciences, or related disciplines and applicable research methods and publishing practices
Successful candidates will have at least five years of substantial and progressively responsible relevant experience in organizational and fiscal management; effective communication skills; commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; a record of scholarly/creative accomplishments; experience with contract negotiations and budgeting, and participation in the library/information science profession
Successful candidates will bring to the role a demonstrated command of trends in scientific data, information policy, and information technologies, personal skills to maintain effective relationships while building consensus with staff, constituents, and professional colleagues, knowledge of technology applications relevant to user-centered library services and excellent project management skills
