Description
Reporting to the Director of Research and Instruction within Library Services, the Temporary Research & Instruction Librarian facilitates use of information in research, teaching, and learning through collaborative relationships with faculty and peers. The librarian creates equitable, student-centered, and integrated learning experiences for students. The librarian will teach in a variety of modalities: one-shots, embedded, video recordings, asynchronous learning modules, and student consultations. The librarian supports instructional design initiatives and partners with campus colleagues to design and implement programs that contribute to student success. The librarian acts as a point of contact for the Sciences & Mathematics Division of the college.
Essential Functions
- Teaches library instruction sessions to FYE (First Year Experience) classes on Finding Information and Documenting Information. Collaborates on the library’s digital and information fluency efforts. Partners with the R&I team and faculty to deliver a program of information and technology fluency for Wheaton’s students so they can use information and technology tools and resources effectively, analytically, ethically, legally, and critically.
- Liaises with academic divisions and departments. Serves as a frequent point of contact for Sciences & Mathematics faculty. Provides disciplinary specific research instruction.
- Develops instructional materials and reviews and edits learning objects along with the other Research & Instruction librarians.
- Provide research support to the college community through Reference Chat. Holds research consultations with faculty and students.
- Other Duties: Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required
- Ability to support the information and research needs of undergraduate students as demonstrated by education or work history.
- Experience working in academic libraries, lesson planning, and teaching.
- Experience working with WMS/OCLC or similar and general database/ reference searching. Experience using projectors and MS Office/Google suite of tools.
- Understanding of basic instructional design and assessment principles.
- Familiarity with research design, data collection and analysis methods.
- Experience providing reference interviews and consultations.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, to remain organized, and to drive initiatives forward with support.
- Ability to engage with people at all skill levels.
- Disposition as a creative problem solver with ability to suggest multiple solutions.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with campus stakeholders, including students, instructors, and staff.
- Aptitude for working effectively with students, instructors, staff, and colleagues; enthusiasm for delivering high quality and timely service to an academic community.
- Experience with Microsoft Office.
Preferred
- Experience with Science/STEM disciplines.
- Formal teaching or training experience. Ability to create learning and training materials for instructors and students, in a higher education setting.
- Broad knowledge of approaches to teaching in academic libraries, experimentation with a variety of pedagogies.
- Ability to listen carefully and thoughtfully respond to disparate concerns of multiple constituencies.
- Working knowledge of instructional design principles and processes. Demonstrated commitment to incorporating inclusive pedagogies.
- Demonstrated experience implementing universal and inclusive design principles. Familiarity with web accessibility standards.
- Strong project management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies independently.
- Experience with LibGuides, Articulate, and Zoom.
- Experience using Canvas or other learning management systems.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required, STEM discipline a plus
- Master’s degree in Library Science preferred. MLIS graduate students welcome to apply.
Work Experience
- 1-3 years in libraries, information literacy instruction, assessment, instructional design
