Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Research and Instruction within Library Services, the Instruction & Design Librarian acts as a liaison to the Sciences & Mathematics Division of the college. The librarian will create equitable, student-centered, and integrated learning experiences for students in partnership with colleagues in R&I.

The librarian facilitates use of information in research, teaching, and learning through collaborative relationships with faculty and peers. They teach in a variety of modalities: one-shot instruction sessions, embedded course support, video recordings, asynchronous learning modules, and student consultations.

The librarian also designs and conducts assessments of the library’s instruction program; integrates information literacy instruction into digital learning spaces; and designs and implements plans to improve the overall student experience with Canvas and other academic technologies.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaboratively leads digital and information fluency efforts. Partners with the R&I team and faculty to deliver a program of information and technology fluency for Wheaton’s students so they can use information and technology tools and resources effectively, analytically, ethically, legally, and critically.
  • Liaises with Sciences & Mathematics divisions and related departments. Serves as a frequent point of contact for faculty and students. Provides regular outreach to departments in the division. Collaborates with faculty to plan, design, and teach disciplinary specific research instruction. Develops/maintains expertise in subject-specific resources, understands information needs, addresses gaps in diverse and equitable representation in the library’s holdings, and selects appropriate items for the library’s collection.
  • Serves as a leader for successful use of Canvas by students. Designs and implements a plan to measure and improve students’ use of Canvas and other academic technologies. Answers Canvas support tickets from students. Prioritizes needs of students in academic programs utilizing systems deeply integrated with Canvas, such as nursing.
  • Designs a yearly assessment cycle. Conducts and participates in qualitative and quantitative measures of equity and access needs and the effectiveness of R&I specific and library programs and services, including authentic assessment of student research, focus groups, and post-interaction surveys. Reports and interprets assessments for community and library leadership. Represents the library in liaising on broad assessment initiatives in Academic Affairs.
  • Manages information literacy instruction in digital learning spaces following best practices, and with a particular focus on summer/winter, pre-college, and 4+1 programs and courses.
  • Remains current with developments in relevant professional areas through reading, research, and participation in conferences and meetings. Scouts trends that relate to library and academic technology. Upgrades skills through personal study, workshops, and conference attendance, etc
  • Other Duties: Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training.

The anticipated hiring or recruitment range for this position is $62,000 – $65,000.
