Lawrence Public Library is a welcoming place for everyone. We are seeking a friendly and dedicated Security Officer to join our team. As the first point of contact for visitors, you will play an important role in ensuring the safety and security of patrons, staff, and the library campus.
Here’s some of what you’ll do:
- Act as “Person-In-Charge” with added authority to manage issues and other situations when supervisory staff are not on-site or unavailable.
- Open the building to the public and secure the building at close.
- Be a dependable self-starter and have a strong work ethic.
- Interact respectfully and calmly with the public, even in stressful encounters.
- Utilize technology including Google suite, security cameras, and incident software to investigate security incidents, write reports, and issue suspensions according to established policies.
- Conduct routine walk-throughs of the library and library campus to ensure compliance with behavior guidelines.
- Diffuse tense situations and initiate calls for assistance to police or emergency personnel as needed.
- Build positive relationships with library staff and patrons.
- Use your strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and empathy to navigate various situations with professionalism, tact, and a deep commitment to patron satisfaction.

- You are certified or willing to be trained in CPR and basic first aid.
- You have a high school education or equivalent and experience working in a security role.
- You value teamwork, but you don’t mind working alone.
We are looking for someone who can work:
- Saturdays – 1:00pm to 6:15pm
- Fridays – 1:00pm to 6:15pm
- Thursdays – 3:00pm to 8:15pm
- Wednesdays – 3:00pm to 8:15pm
