Part-time Assistant Children’s Librarian
Summary: The children’s library assistant position is mainly responsible for circulation and assisting patrons of all ages. The children’s library assistant will need to provide services mainly to children and families but may be asked to work upstairs at our adult services desk as needed.
Responsibilities:
Attend staff meetings and training as needed.
Other responsibilities may include but are not limited to weeding books, helping prepare crafts, and cleaning the patron areas.
Cataloging and processing as needed.
Reader’s advisory and/or familiarity with book suggestion web-based services.
Shelve returned materials and shelf-read.
Assisting patrons with basic directional questions by phone or in-house. Refer complex questions to the reference librarian if available.
Placing holds on materials requested by patrons.
Answering telephone and handling telephone renewals.
Assisting patrons with basic technology needs including printing, copying, faxing and simple computer questions.
Check-ins, checkouts, renewals, registrations, and accepting payment for lost books and items.
Opening and closing circulation in either children’s or upstairs circulation desk.
Familiarity with our museum pass program.
Assist the Youth Services Librarian with marketing programs either by creating flyers, writing articles, or updating the website or social media.
Working with the Youth Services Librarian to provide programs for children and their families.

Perform the job in a reasonable time and in a manner, which achieves reasonable performance and quality standards.
Communicate easily and effectively in group and individual situations utilizing oral and written communication skills.
Perform the job satisfactorily under the stressors of the position.
Perform the job without disrupting the work of others.
Exercise sufficient judgment to perform the job.
Qualifications:
Must be able to lift 10 - 25 pounds and walk up and down stairs.
Basic computer skills including email and utilization of our online computer database Koha and a general understanding of our online services.
Pleasant personality and the ability to work under pressure when dealing with the public.
Minimum High School diploma with some college and/or library experience preferred or experience in a field directly related to child or teen services.
Starting rate is $15 per hour. Includes Monday and Friday shifts from 10 am to 4 pm and one Saturday per month to start with additional hours as needed.
