About the Opportunity

We believe in access to stories and information to engage and inspire our library community. The ideal candidate for Collection Development Librarian: Youth Services and Media is a detail-oriented and highly motivated individual who enjoys finding diverse and inclusive library materials, has strong decision-making skills, and communicates well as a team member. While previous centralized collection development experience is not required, the ideal candidate will bring some knowledge of library collections, Teen Services, graphic novels, and film/TV, as well as an enthusiastic willingness to learn. A love for troubleshooting and finding new ways to improve processes is a plus!

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Collection Services, this position will provide collection development services for library customers, including selecting diverse print and digital materials, assessing collection needs for our library communities, and introducing new and innovative materials and resources to the library collection. The position contributes significantly to a community library’s effective operations and services, providing library services, spaces, and resources that are representative of diverse cultures and perspectives, intentionally inclusive, and accessible to everyone.

Essential Functions

  1. Select library materials that reflect the diversity of our communities and provide equity of access through the sourcing of inclusive formats and access points. These are achieved using online databases and ordering tools based on publisher summaries, professional reviews, author and publisher track records, local relevance, and evidence of predictive or stated demand in our communities. This position will focus primarily on  audio-visual formats (e.g., DVD and Blu-Ray) and Teen materials in print and digital formats, cross-train on selecting children’s materials and may choose other materials as needed.
  2. Understand, embrace, champion, and incorporate intellectual freedom concepts into their work and provide input for collection questions and requests for reconsideration of library materials.
  3. Ensure that material budgets are spent responsibly and meet fiscal year deadlines.
  4. Analyze collection inventory, holds, circulation turnover, and other various reports to plan new selection and collection maintenance activities. Regularly review library materials and perform collection maintenance based on currency, relevance, condition, circulation history, building space consideration, and subject coverage.
  5. Review customer and staff requests for materials and select materials as appropriate based on the Sno-Isle Libraries Collection Development Policy and Collection Development Guidelines criteria.
  6. Respond to collection-related questions and requests from library staff and the public by various methods.
  7. Consult with community library managers on collection size and organization.
  8. Review professional literature and current news related to upcoming titles, publishing trends, awards, collection policies, and reader's advisory topics to share with library staff and create and deliver training on issues related to the collection for community library staff.
  9. Provide Readers’ Advisory support and training to library staff by serving on collaborative teams, supporting book-based library services or programming, assisting with title selection for book discussion kits, and other related activities.
  10. Provide collection curation support for the organization, including creating digital lists and providing guidance for in-library displays, for both print and digital materials.
  11. Positively represent the library as a collaborative partner in discussions with vendors and other partners.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position can be acquired by a combination of experience and education including:

  1. A Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited university is required.
  2. One to three years of related professional librarian experience is required, with a preference for public service work supporting customers/users.
  3. One to three years of centralized acquisitions experience or intensive collection experience, i.e. selecting materials for a single library location, or a high level of participation in a system-level curation team or collection project.
  4. Ability to obtain Washington State Librarian certificate.

Benefits and Compensation

Pay Range: $7,200.27 - $9,970.13 monthly
