Job Summary: The Teen Librarian provides programs and services that appeal to teens and primarily works in the teen and children’s areas. The Librarian provides reference and reader’s advisory services, oversees a teen advisory board, assists teens with conducting research, provides technical support, and contributes to collection maintenance.
This position is a full-time, exempt, at-will 40-hour-per-week position.
Essential Functions:
- Provides reference, reader’s advisory, technology, research databases, and library account assistance to patrons at public service desks and by phone, which may be in the call center and throughout the library. (25%)
- Provides leadership for planning, promoting, implementing, and evaluating programs for teen patrons. (25%)
- Develops and coordinates outreach events at middle and high schools and other community organizations. Assists with securing program funds from funding sources. (20%)
- Advances teen engagement with the library by guiding a Teen Advisory Board, eliciting teen input on library materials, programs, and services, and recruiting teen volunteers. Collaborates with peers and other colleagues with expertise in serving teens. (15%)
- Collects teen services-related statistical information and prepares reports, including teen space usage, circulation statistics for teen materials, and attendance at teen programs. (15%)
Additional Responsibilities:
- Manages, schedules, and maintains exhibits in the Teen Art Gallery.
- Evaluates and recommend library materials and technology of interest to teens.
- Serves as manager on duty, focusing on resolving patron issues through de-escalation tactics.
- Attends staff meetings and serves on committees focusing on representing the needs and interests of the patrons living in the neighborhoods the library serves.
- Attends conferences, networks with other educational program professionals, and observes programs at other library and community locations to maintain knowledge of trends and interests regarding program offerings that sustain or increase audience engagement.
- Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to library property.
Requirements
The tentative schedule for this position is:
- Tuesdays: WFH
- Wednesdays: 10 AM - 6:30 PM
- Thursdays: 10:30 AM - 7 PM
- Fridays: 8:30 AM - 5 PM
- Saturday: 8:30 AM - 5 PM
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education and experience: Master's degree in library and information science from an accredited program and three years of progressively responsible experience in a public library setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Technical skills: Intermediate skills with using personal computers, performing data entry and using information databases.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience promoting programs for patrons of all ages using social media strategies, preferably in a public library setting.
- Language Skills: Reads, writes, and speaks Spanish fluently.
Working Conditions:
Primarily physical work with repetitive handling of items, frequent walking and standing, occasional lifting of items up to 40 pounds, and occasional pushing of wheeled carts over 100 pounds. Work may include extended periods of viewing a computer monitor and operating a keyboard. Requires sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate a computer, office, and library equipment. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes permit the employee to work in a multilevel facility. Seeing, hearing, and speaking are required.
