Position Overview
The Adult Services Librarian is a key member of the Library management team, overseeing services, collections, and programming for adults ages 18+. This position plays a crucial role in circulation services, reader’s advisory, outreach, and program development while fostering innovation and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver innovative programs and events for adults 18+ in various formats and venues.
- Oversee collection development and management to ensure a diverse, relevant selection of materials.
- Provide reader’s advisory, reference services, and technology assistance to patrons.
- Foster partnerships with community organizations, local colleges, and city departments.
- Lead marketing and promotion efforts for adult programs and resources.
- Utilize statistics and patron feedback to inform collection and service development.
- Assist in strategic planning, policy development, and budgeting for adult services.
- Supervise, train, and mentor library assistants and volunteers.
- Ensure a welcoming, inclusive, and customer service-focused environment for all patrons.
Qualifications
Required:
- Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program (or ability to obtain within six months of hire)
- At least one year of supervisory experience.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Valid Iowa Driver's License (or ability to obtain before employment).
Preferred:
- Experience in planning and executing programs for adults.
- Familiarity with cataloging methods and integrated library systems.
- At least one year of library or public sector experience.
- Fluency in a language other then English is a plus.
Physical & Mental Abilities
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and move loaded book carts.
- Ability to stand, walk, and operate a computer for extended periods.
- Strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving abilities.
