NATURE OF WORK:

This is professional library work. Work includes providing customer service; performing reference and readers’ advisory work; planning and delivering outreach; planning, overseeing, and delivering programs; and acquiring materials for the library’s collection. Work may also include assigning and following up on the work of para-professional and clerical employees and overseeing the operations of a branch or department in the absence of the manager.

Provides high-quality customer service to library patrons and staff in person, by telephone, and electronically. This includes responding to patron inquiries, providing reference and readers’ advisory services, and interpreting and enforcing policies and procedures.

Assists the manager with daily operations; scheduling; training, supervising, and mentoring of staff; handling difficult patron interactions; resolving customer service issues; and managing the operation of the library or assigned unit in the manager’s absence.

Assists patrons with their library accounts and the use of library resources and services, which includes troubleshooting technology issues.

Assists with and oversees tasks to keep materials readily available to the public and make the library welcoming and accessible.

Promotes library collections and resources through displays, lists, and other means.

Responsible for the centralized selection and ordering of materials according to the Library’s Collection Development Policy to provide a collection that meets the community’s needs.

Participates in collection maintenance with weeding and floating tools and resolves problem items.

Promotes and supports the principles of Intellectual Freedom, as defined by the American Library Association, with staff and patrons. Resolves related concerns or redirects them to appropriate sources as needed.

Participates in trainings, meetings, and professional development opportunities that correlate with job responsibilities

Keeps informed of technological changes in the library profession; utilizes all available equipment and resources to fulfill the library’s mission.

Records and maintains daily cash reports, statistics, and other records.

Develops and delivers centralized programming responsive to changing community needs and demographic trends.

Supervises and delivers story times, programs, tours, and other library-related activities for various ages and community groups both inside and outside the library.

May operate library vehicles to transport materials and attend events.

Supervises staff who perform the library’s statistical and metric work and completes library reporting requirements for local, county, state, and national agencies.

Develops and delivers system-wide staff development initiatives that include new employee orientation, continuing education, and library training needs.

Performs technical cataloging and classification work including research of records, maintaining standardization of the library database, and assigning classification numbers and subject headings to library materials.

Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established by the supervisor.

Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of and skill to operate computers and other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks.

Knowledge of standard library principles, procedures, services, and materials.

Knowledge of library reference and research tools.

Knowledge of reader interest levels, books, and authors.

Skill in reading and explaining rules, policies, and procedures.

Skill in initiating and using independent judgement within general policy guidelines.

Skill in determining accurate information which includes source and currency evaluation, critical thinking, fact-checking, and relevance assessment.

Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software.

Ability to view printed text on book bindings to retrieve library materials.

Ability to use tact and diplomacy when interacting with patrons and library staff.

Ability to maintain patron confidentiality.

Ability to use library principles, methods, and techniques in collection development, cataloging, classification, circulation, programming, staff development, data, and reference services.

Ability to maintain accurate records of cash reports, circulation statistics, and other library reporting requirements.

Ability to assign, oversee, and evaluate the work of paraprofessional and clerical employees.

Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally, deliver presentations, and answer questions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.

Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.

Ability to adhere to library safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Ability to stand, walk, and bend continuously; reach, stoop, squat, crouch, and push frequently; and climb, balance, kneel, crawl, pull, and sit occasionally.

Ability to move objects weighing up to twenty (20) pounds occasionally and weighing up to ten (10) pounds continuously

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: (The knowledge, skills, and abilities above may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.)

  1. Master of Library Science degree or Master of Science in Library or Information Science degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA)

OR

  1. Bachelor’s degree

AND

Three (3) years of experience working in a library or related experience in teaching, recreation, social work, or a related field

OR

  1. Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Must register for Nebraska Public Librarian Certification through the Nebraska Library Commission within 30 days of the hiring date.  Must complete necessary continuing education requirements to keep certification current while employed by the Omaha Public Library.

If assigned to operate library vehicles to transport materials and attend events, must possess and maintain a valid class “O” automobile driver’s license.

Must be able to transport oneself or coordinate transportation to locations throughout the City during the course of the work day.

Must be able to work flexible schedules that include evenings and weekends.

WORKING CONDITIONS: (The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.)

Work is performed amid normal conditions of humidity, odors, and dust or at various sites throughout the city when addressing students and community groups. Work may involve working to resolve complaints and issues with challenging library patrons. Work also involves retrieving library materials which are stored on shelves as low as six inches above the floor and as high as seven feet.
