Job Description
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides library patrons in our Youth Services department with information and reference services by accessing and demonstrating how to access information through books, computers, media services, and outreach programs. Plans and promotes programs for children and teens. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides instruction to customers in the use of the library, its resources, and equipment; performs reference searches using library resources and on-line databases; responds to questions in person and by phone; conducts activities such as story times, discussion groups, tours, and outreach programs; maintains bulletin boards, displays, materials, files, technical equipment, and desk stations for staff and customers; may act as Librarian on duty; gathers and compiles statistics; may assist in coordinating work of library clerks, shelvers, and volunteers; and performs additional duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Physical Demands: Light to moderate physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 30 pounds; frequent lifting, carrying, walking, and standing; may require frequent pulling, pushing, bending, and stooping; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens; vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents; hand/eye coordination for operation of a computer system, carts, and moveable shelving. Work Environment: Works in a clean, comfortable environment. Equipment Used: Frequently uses standard office equipment including a computer system. Experience in Youth Services preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered. Knowledge: General knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System and Innovative Interfaces online computer systems; routine software and business applications, including but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and databases; reference materials and resources; library operations and functions; and childrens and adult programming. Abilities: Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; use general office equipment including typewriters, calculators, and copy/fax machine; performs basic mathematical calculations; work shifts, nights, and weekends. Skills: Strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
