Job Description
1. Provides excellent customer service employing communication skills necessary to effectively determine the needs of the patrons, and providing significant information and readers’ advisory services. 2. Participates in design, promotion, presentation, and evaluation of children’s programs in and outside the library. 3. Creates an environment in the children's area that is conducive to the enjoyable and constructive use of library resources through displays, student art exhibits, and bulletin boards. 4. In the absence of branch management, directs the daily operation of the branch and initiates appropriate procedures in the event of an emergency. 5. Understands and applies library policies, procedures, and services. 6. At the information desk, assists patrons in the use of the library and oversees circulation functions. 7. Actively promotes library services and materials through publicity, merchandising, programs, tours, and community outreach. 8. Keeps current with new, popular materials of interest to branch patrons. Maintains knowledge of print and electronic reference resources. 9. Assists patrons in use of online library catalog, databases, and Microsoft Office applications. Troubleshoots basic computer and office equipment problems. 10. Keeps informed of library and departmental information and changes via electronic and written mail and through attendance at staff meetings. 11. Performs other job-related duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned.

Demonstrates a willingness to contribute ideas, maintain flexibility, and support changes within the organization. 3. Knowledge of children’s literature, general subject areas, authors, and reader interest levels. 4. Knowledge of age-appropriate techniques/resources for effective storytelling & children’s programming. 5. Uses dramatic, artistic, musical, and mnemonic skills in presenting programs. 6. Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of children’s programs and to make adjustments as necessary. 7. Ability to prepare attractive and inviting children’s displays. 8. Ability to handle a variety of situations in a calm and professional manner and to act appropriately under pressure. 9. Ability to match patrons with materials and services appropriate to their interest and abilities using knowledge of library materials and services and effective reference interviewing techniques. 10. Demonstrates skills necessary to communicate effectively with staff, patrons, and groups both verbally and in written form. 11. Knowledge of library services and computer programs, Microsoft Office applications, organization of library materials, general library practices, and general office procedures and equipment. Requires experience working with children. Prefer 2+ years of library or other public service work experience. Requires excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team-based environment. Requires ability to work one evening per week, one Saturday per month, and about 5 Sundays per year.
