Job Description
Background Information: The role of Reference Services is to provide professional reference service to the city and region, support staff system-wide in the acquisition of reference skills and further lifelong learning for our customers. Our collection includes 36,000 reference books, 120,000 bound reference periodicals, 1.7 million Federal Documents and a wide range of electronic resources. We are a Federal Selective Depository Library as well as a Patent and Trademark Resource Center. The successful candidate will demonstrate passion and innovation in providing exemplary customer service to the public, a strong background in professional reference work and excellent supervisory skills. This is an outstanding opportunity to work with a team of highly experienced colleagues.
Duties and Responsibilities: Creates positive experiences for library customers by providing professional reference service, reader and media advisory, and collection maintenance. Staffs busy reference desks, phone lines and chat queues, serving a diverse clientele of all ages. Promotes community outreach and programming. Communicates effectively about issues and initiatives with customers, colleagues and administration. Works with a team of Senior Librarians and a Manager to develop, design and implement services targeted to specific customer groups. Oversees daily department operations including personnel, scheduling, and customer service issues. Serves as virtual reference coordinator.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of print and online reference resources and passion for increasing and sharing this knowledge. Knowledge of public library information management. Skill in providing leadership. Ability to create and maintain positive staff relationships. Ability to thrive working in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds and age groups. Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, and community. Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility. Ability to select, train, motivate and supervise professional and clerical staff.
Experience: Two years of professional work in a library.
Education: A Master’s in Library Science from an ALA accredited program.
Special Requirements: A background check must be passed after the offer to hire has been made. Spanish language fluency is a definite plus.
