Job Description
SPANISH FLUENCY REQUIRED
Status/Schedule: Regular, full-time, 40 hours per week. The schedule will be determined by the needs of the department and may include evening and weekend hours.
Salary Range: $19.09 - $23.48 per hour starting salary range; $19.09 - $27.88 per hour full salary range
Duties and Responsibilities: Plans and presents English and Spanish language storytimes in preschool classrooms/childcare centers to children ages 0-5 years and their caregivers/teachers. Provides outreach programs for teachers, families and caregivers designed to promote effective, fun and simple early literacy activities in a variety of settings including home visits. Creates positive experiences for library customers by providing programming, reference and readers/media advisory. Works cooperatively with staff, volunteers and supervisors to support the Read Aloud Program’s planning, communication and delivery activities. Provides organizational and instructional support for storytime professional development.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of and/or interest in child development, infancy through adolescence, and current research in early literacy and child/brain development. Knowledge of early literacy best practices in library and community settings. Knowledge of children’s literature. Knowledge of the public library’s and literacy’s role in the lives in of children and families. Skill in public speaking and sharing information effectively with groups of adults and children in both English and Spanish. Ability to work with youth in positive and developmentally appropriate ways. Ability to train, coach, evaluate and provide constructive feedback to storytime providers. Ability to maintain and build relationships with schools and community organizations. Ability to thrive in an environment with constant public contact with people from all backgrounds and age groups. Ability to demonstrate positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor in working with customers, coworkers, volunteers and community. Ability to creatively solve problems, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to be innovative, flexible and well organized.
Experience: Two years of experience providing services to children and their caregivers in a variety of settings.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, child development, social services or a related field.
Special Requirements: Spanish fluency required. Must have a passion for serving Denver’s children and families; connecting them with information, resources and programs both inside the library and in the community. Must enjoy working with children in a preschool setting. A background check must be passed after the offer to hire has been made. Must have a valid Colorado driver’s license and vehicle for outreach visits.
