Job Description
Responsible for library material copy-cataloging, converting of data, processing of materials, and some clerical tasks. Develops and promotes good community relations among various community and school clientele.
Perform copy cataloging and assign subject headings and classification requiring the exercise of independent professional judgment. Upgrade the bibliographic record to a fuller record for better access to the collection.
Enter original cataloging for all library materials both print and electronic to include
eBooks not found in OCLC databases.
Edit bibliographic data, establish cross-references, and conduct on-line searches of computer authority files, other databases, and standard bibliographic tools for original cataloging applications.
Enter, correct and delete records from database. Perform regular database maintenance.
Construct authority, subject and series headings according to Library of Congress and other established standards, conventions, and protocols. Ensure adherence to rules for cataloging.
Assist in the maintenance and revision of authority and catalog files.
Create item record, assign cutter and print spine label for each physical item.
Lead the way in researching new techniques and technologies for cataloging, share findings with colleagues, and make recommendations for implementation in department processes as appropriate.
Provide team assistance for special projects, weeding and new library set-up.
Respond professionally to telephone calls and assist staff and community with concerns and questions.
Demonstrate a professional, positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationship with staff, co-workers, and volunteers.
Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree with specialized library cataloging courses.
Working knowledge of library services and organization system.
Knowledge of cataloging practices and procedures and knowledge of library automated systems.
Must demonstrate strong organizational, planning, promotional skills.
Ability to quickly adapt to and learn new software without extensive training,
flexibility and willingness to embrace change.
Must be familiar with AACR2, Dewey Decimal system, OCLC, and Library of
Congress Subject Headings.
Strong ability to use computers and associated Microsoft office software as well as
accurate word processing and data entry skills is required.
Must have the ability to learn and become proficient in functions required to perform job duties, working effectively independently or as part of a team to complete tasks as assigned.
Must communicate effectively.
Knowledge of new RDA Cataloging Requirements.
One (1) to three (3) years job related experience.
