Job Description
BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION The Serials Manager in the Books and Manuscripts Department is responsible for all aspects of the management of the History Colorado’s serials and microfilm collections including check-in, processing, records maintenance, quality control, transportation of serials and microfilm, budget tracking, and support of curatorial activities. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - Appraises and organizes incoming newspapers and serials. - Maintains accurate and thorough records of locations, holdings, inventory, and status of same. - Develops new procedures and collection management tasks to improve tracking, cataloging, and collection care. - Processes microfilm orders in coordination with library staff. - Prioritizes and coordinates the filming of serials in cooperation with a local microfilm vendor, and manages all related tasks including scheduling, transportation, delivery and return. - Manages the microfilm budget. Includes tracking income and expenses and negotiating price agreements with the a local microfilm vendor and other vendors as needed. - Complies with History Colorado collection management standards via the conduct of quality control inspections of microfilm. - Strives to build and maintain complete series of serials where possible so that comprehensive coverage is achieved. - Maintains subscriptions to all serials and newspapers in the collection. - Works with publishers, libraries, and historical societies to ensure that a comprehensive scope of Colorado serials is collected. - Negotiates and coordinates the loan and return of collection materials for filming when beneficial to History Colorado. - Maintains good relations with the Colorado historical community. - Advises curatorial staff regarding the suitability of serial collection items for exhibition and interpretation and recommends appropriate items in support of staff projects. - Develops, creates, and seeks out new and better ways to conduct the duties of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SUBSTITUTIONS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Requirements: BA in history, museum studies, library science or related field or equivalent experience. Experience with data input and tracking using spreadsheets and a variety of other computer software tools. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with staff, vendors, patrons, and colleagues; to meet deadlines; and, to work as a team member. Highly Desirable: Experience working with library materials in a special collections library environment. Familiarity with microforms and archival standards. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Must be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly; must maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license and be able to drive a variety of vehicles including cargo vans and pick-up trucks for transporting collections. A background check will be conducted as part of the selection process if not previously completed. This position is subject to the CHS compensatory time agreement as a condition of employment.
