The Community
Bayfield is located in Southwest Colorado’s Pine River Valley and lies in La Plata County. The county was named for the La Plata River and the La Plata Mountains and is the Spanish language word for "silver". La Plata County is home to over 51,000 residents and is accessible by jet service and major highways. The county seat is the growing city of Durango. La Plata County is home to Durango Mountain Resort with Wolf Creek and Silverton ski resorts close by. Bayfield, and the surrounding La Plata County, offers a wide array of recreational opportunities throughout the year. The Pine River (locally called Los Pinos) starts at the top of the valley, flowing south from Vallecito Reservoir through Bayfield, and then toward Ignacio. It ultimately joins the San Juan River in Navajo Reservoir, and eventually the mighty Colorado River.
