Bayfield is located in Southwest Colorado’s Pine River Valley and lies in La Plata County. The county was named for the La Plata River and the La Plata Mountains and is the Spanish language word for "silver". La Plata County is home to over 51,000 residents and is accessible by jet service and major highways. The county seat is the growing city of Durango. La Plata County is home to Durango Mountain Resort with Wolf Creek and Silverton ski resorts close by.
