Job Description
Under minimal supervision, manages the daily operations of the Periodicals Department and supervises student workers. RESPONSIBILITIES (• denotes essential/primary responsibilities, o denotes secondary responsibilities) • Assist faculty, students, staff, and the community in access and use of periodicals in all formats. • Diagnose problems with and maintain microform reader/printers; call service person when needed. • Supervise work/study-eligible student workers. • Coordinate check-in, shelving, temporary binding and maintenance for current and bound periodicals and microforms. • Serve as primary liaison with subscription agents and periodical vendors/publishers. • Prepare and processes orders, claims, and cancellations with subscription agents. • Use library systems to generate claims for late issues and submit them to vendors electronically. • Catalog, update, and correct serial records and holdings in the integrated library system, maintaining accuracy and incorporating local cataloging standards. • Manage relocation projects for periodicals collections. • Handle print periodical withdrawal projects in consultation with the Cataloging Department and the Collections Librarian. • Prepare and process periodicals, monographs, government documents, and other materials for commercial binding. • Assist Electronic Resources and Serials Librarian with projects related to electronic resources. • Prepare annual statistical reports on periodicals and other reports as needed. • Participate in continuing education through workshops and other training. • Participate in the life of the college through library and campus committees as appropriate. • Ingest materials into the Digital Archives as requested by the Digital Archives Librarian. • Add and edit metadata; update records, applying standards and best practices used in the description and maintenance of the digital repository platform. • Assist the Government Documents Librarian with special cataloging projects. o Support and contribute to the goal of achieving greater diversity at Colorado College and work effectively with the many constituencies in a college environment. o Promote a culture of safety and environmental protection by working in a safe manner; immediately reporting unsafe situations and accidents; following college procedures; and participating in appropriate safety training. o Act in a socially responsible manner and model environmental sustainability by exercising financial prudence, using college resources wisely, and supporting ecological initiatives and innovation. o Perform other duties as assigned or requested. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Two years college/Associate’s degree plus a minimum of two years related experience, to include experience working in a networked computer environment and knowledge of print and digital file management; proficient with computer software programs including Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook) and Web browsers; knowledge of information systems, specialized library software including library management systems, and expertise in management of bibliographic records; knowledge of OCLC, MARC and other electronic coding systems; required; well-organized; attention to detail and ability to work with bibliographic records for extended periods of time; ability to balance multiple priorities and work in a collegial team environment; excellent interpersonal communication skills. Physical requirements include finger and wrist dexterity and hand/eye coordination to perform keyboard functions; considerable sitting, frequent stooping, bending and standing, moderate physical effort (lifting up to 40 pounds); ability to push loaded book truck. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree; familiarity with Innovative Interfaces Internet periodicals management software.
