Job Description
Role:
Checks library materials in and out, issues library cards, collects fines, and shelves materials.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
40% - PATRON ASSISTANCE - Assists patrons in the use of library materials and services by guiding them to appropriate resources and explaining policies and procedures in order to provide patrons with information about library resources.
50% - CIRCULATION - Checks out and renews materials; issues and updates library cards; and follows procedures and collects money for fines and over-dues; processes holds; checks in materials and sorts and routes the materials to their proper location in order to assist patrons with borrowing of materials.
5% - SHELVING - Empties the book drop and bins of materials from courier deliveries and places items on carts; shelves library materials by putting carts in order according to type and places materials on shelves according to Dewey decimal number or author name; searches for and retrieves requested items according to paging slips; reads the order of materials on the shelves by checking for correct Dewey or alphabetical order, shifts and straightens materials to correct the order as needed, and sorts carts of returned material in order to maintain the order of the collection so that materials can be found by library staff and patrons.
5% - OTHER DUTIES – Schedules meeting rooms, coordinates volunteers and pages, identifies materials in disrepair, assists in making displays, places holds on specifically requested materials, recommends additions to the collections, weeds materials, and assists Supervisor in order to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma (or GED) and experience in a public contact position; or any equivalent combination of experience, which provides the success factors.
Skill in basic computer operation (preferred)
Fluency in English and Spanish languages (preferred)
