Job Description
**This position averages approximately 23 hours per week; some evenings and weekends required.** The Librarian performs professional work assisting patrons in the discovery and use of library materials and technology. Coordinates collection maintenance in designated areas. Develops and promotes community outreach and programming. The listed examples of work are not intended to be all-inclusive. They may be modified with additions, deletions, or changes as necessary. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Responds to the needs of customers and other employees. Responsible for the design and implementation of program areas within budget parameters, including outreach services to the community. Promotes use of library materials. Reviews collection for removals and replacements. Acts as a resource for non-professional staff through reference and readers advisory consultation, mentoring, and training. Provides reference service and reader’s advisory assistance to patrons. Assesses patrons needs and instructs them in making effective use of Library resources. Assists patrons in use of technological resources including the Internet. Acts as Librarian in Charge during evening and weekend hours or in the absence of the Library Director or managers. Other Duties & Responsibilities Promotes use of library materials through display, handouts, programs, etc. Maintains supply inventory for work area. Trains and works with volunteers. May oversee the Internet desk. Assists patrons with the use of the Internet. May represent the Library at community events and meetings.

Knowledge Working knowledge of: Standard library practices, including collection development and publishing trends the Internet Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Skills and Abilities Computer Skills - Basic computer skills needed to use technology. Also needed to work with word processing and spreadsheet programs. Strong Internet skills needed to instruct others on Internet use. Communication - Strong customer service skills needed to determine patrons’ needs. Strong written and oral communication skills required. Public speaking needed to present programs. Analytical - Strong skills required to deduce patrons’ needs and wants by using reference interviewing methods. Also required to evaluate collection materials and programs. Strong analytical skills needed to problem solve on the spot. Mechanical - Basic skills needed for routine operation and problem solving of library equipment, including but not limited to computers, printers, copiers, and microfiche reader printer. General Management - Basic skills needed to allocate budget for materials. Also needed to execute procedures and policies as Librarian in Charge. Mathematical - Basic skills for budget purchases and purchase card reconcilement.
