Job Description
As a bilingual (Arabic and English) subject specialist and advanced researcher for Arab and Islamic Heritage materials, the Senior Content Specialist will support QNL Partnerships and Special Collections by scoping, evaluating, appraising, researching, and documenting potential collections for inclusion in the QNL collections. The position will primarily provide expertise related to digitization projects of archival collections with external partners, but may evaluate print and other format collections that the library may wish to acquire. The position will provide or review scholarly descriptions of items, in Arabic and English, including content related metadata and authority control for names and places, exhibition materials, and finding aids. Regularly scheduled evening and weekend work may be required. Detailed Description - Evaluate, appraise, research, and document potential external collections for inclusion in the QNL collections. - Provide initial scoping review of potential partner collections to assist QNL in deciding what portion or items will be digitized. - As part of the scoping review, liaise with partner content experts or curators as needed in order to ensure that the scoping review is complete and accurately describes the collection, its priorities and the work required. - Create or review expert academic level descriptions and authority controls, in both Arabic and English, for identified items following an internationally accepted process, format and standards. - Assist in the development of research and access tools to aid researchers, students, and community users in finding special collection items from partnerships or in the QNL. - Provides authoritative subject expertise, advice and communications regarding the importance of the cultural or historic items, through research and advanced subject knowledge, in special collections or QNL digital collections for documents, manuscripts, maps, books, photographs, and other formats. - Assists in the development of content for publications, exhibitions, displays, websites, and digital repositories and for external projects. - Utilize advanced research tools from libraries, societies, research organizations, or archives to identify, classify, establish provenance and organize special collections of items available from partnerships or owned by the QNL. - Publications, descriptions, research tools, etc., to be provided in both Arabic and English (simultaneously) and at an international academic publication standard. - Strong analytical and computer skills. - Contributes to the field in areas of specialization through service, research, writing, outreach, presentations, and/or teaching. - Serve on designated committees throughout the library. - Keep abreast of developments, trends and issues in all areas of responsibilities. - Familiarize, understand and implement QF health, safety, and environment policy, procedures, legal regulations and objectives applicable to areas of responsibility. Ensures coordination with HSE department in implementing, monitoring and reviewing of HSE performance to ensure work under his/her control is performed in a safe, healthy and environmentally sound manner. - This position includes, but is not limited to, other duties as required and defined by the scope, purpose, and spirit of the institution and are not always indicative of the title and grade of the position.
Additional Info & Requirements
- Internationally recognized Ph.D. in a relevant subject such as Arab, Gulf, or Islamic History, Philosophy, or Cultural Studies. - Demonstrable record of international, regional or local research, writing and publication in either Arabic or English (preferably in both). - Experience in researching and documenting the cultural importance and provenance of Arab and Islamic materials. - 3 years of progressively responsible related experience. - Preference will be given to a native Arabic speaker who is able to communicate, write and present fluently in both Arabic and English (IELTS overall band 7.0 or equivalent). - Preference will be given to those with kknowledge of current archives or special collection arrangement and description standards and relevant descriptive standards. - Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team.
