Job Description

Arapahoe Library District is seeking a Collection Development Librarian who specializes in children’s and teen materials.  The person in this position uses their knowledge of child development, early literacy concepts and literature trends to focus on developing these collections for the district by purchasing resources in all formats that will spark interest and meet a wide range of needs in the community.   The ideal candidate will be skilled in analyzing the collection and monitoring trends to ensure that the best possible purchase and maintenance decisions are made.   The Collection Development Librarian reports to the Manager of Library Materials Services and works as a team member of the department.

Position: Full-time, Exempt. Must be able to primarily Monday – Friday during business hours. Some special projects may entail working occasional evenings or weekends.
Hiring Range:
$39,800 - $49, 770 per year

Role: Identifies, selects, analyzes and weeds children’s and teen materials.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:
50% MATERIALS SELECTION - Selects and orders physical and digital materials for the collection by identifying the most cost effective vendor, selecting desired materials, and preparing orders for materials to be acquired.

35% COLLECTION ANALYSIS - Identifies appropriate materials for the collection by gaining a full understanding of the Library District's collection philosophy, overall collection and branch holdings, the unique requirements of particular communities, and developing a profile for orders that will address the needs.

15% WEEDING - Organizes the collection by determining the usefulness of materials, making decisions for their removal from the collection, and mentoring branch employees on collection maintenance practices, in order to present an attractive, organized and updated collection.

2. MATERIALS SELECTION - Effective recommendations for vendors and library materials.
3. COLLECTION ANALYSIS - Effectively identify appropriate library materials.
4. WEEDING - Effectively organized and updated collection.

Qualifications:
Minimum of two years similar or related experience, required.

Master’s Degree in Library Science, required.

Intermediate technology skills for Windows, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer and Outlook, required.

Intermediate skills in Sierra, preferred.

Considerable knowledge of materials selection and collection development principles; collection assessment and evaluation techniques; publishing trends; and current recreational and information needs of the public, required.

Intermediate skills in collection weeding, preferred.

Ability to be mobile 50% of the time and sit as needed; ability to bend, stoop, reach, and push a loaded wheeled book truck weighing up to 100 pounds, 10% of the time, required. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds, unassisted, occasionally, and up to 50 pounds, assisted, occasionally, required.

Ability to focus on the customer, show integrity, be inclusive, enjoy learning and have fun.

Ability to comfortably present information in a clear and engaging manner in dealing with customers and colleagues one-on-one or in groups, in both formal and informal settings.

Ability to exercise confidence and excitement in the vast technological and online resources the Library District has available.

Established in 1966, the Arapahoe Library District serves more than 200,000 residents living in Arapahoe County. Arapahoe County and other major suburban counties make up the greater metropolitan area surrounding Denver, Colorado. The Arapahoe Library District operates eight branch libraries, including mobile library services, and a library at the County Detention Center, funded by the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department. A seven-member Board of Trustees sets the library budget and determines policy.
