DESCRIPTION:
Under limited supervision, provides professional library services in regard to classifying, processing, cataloging and otherwise describing and managing library materials. Supervision limited to work-study students, interns, or volunteers. THIS IS NOT A DATA ENTRY POSITION. Benefits are provided based on part time status.
Part time position flexible 20 hours per week, Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Utilizes computer application (Mandarin Library Automation System) to catalog, process, and otherwise manage library materials in the Nebraska History Library. There will be limited copy cataloging (mainly with the use of CatExpress (OCLC) or other copy cataloging databases available on the Web), BUT 50% of the cataloging responsibilities includes performing complex and extensive original cataloging of various types of materials in traditional and newer formats within Mandarin with established procedures and templates. Uses approved methods (accepted practices of library science) to catalog, process and otherwise manage library materials, which may include one or more of the following: books, maps, serials, and other published materials. Verify or provide basic descriptive cataloging and entry points with MARC-tagging according to Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2) and Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), as well as using a modified Dewey Decimal classification system with unique Cutter numbers. Employs research in the course of describing materials. Investigates and evaluates procedures and makes recommendations on ways to improve efficiency of user access to historical published materials emphasizing enhanced bibliographic records while preserving original material and data. Coordinates office operations and available resources to meet assignments. Moves and lifts library materials. Contributes to the formulation and implementation of cataloging policies and procedures and assists in maintenance and enhancement of the online catalog, library inventory, and assessing outsourced cataloging work on a limited basis.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
REQUIREMENTS: Post high school coursework/training in library science, archives administration, history, public administration, museum studies or related field and two years of experiencein cataloging, processing or otherwise working with library/archives materials
PREFERRED: MLS from an ALA accredited program or Bachelors degree/equivalent experience; knowledge of cataloging (MARC format and Dewey Decimal System) and metadata practices with an awareness of current trends and emerging technologies in cataloging and bibliographic control (particularly RDA)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: the library cataloging responsibilities assigned to the position; the organizational structure, mission, and activities of the Nebraska State Historical Society; sources of information pertinent to the assigned duties; agency policy and procedures; the theories, principles and practices of library science and historical research methods (preferred). Ability to: formulate and recommend alternative courses of action to meet organizational/operational goals and objectives; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and public; give or receive and carry out written and oral supervision; express oneself effectively orally and in writing; use automated systems and other general office equipment to perform duties; organize and describe physical materials and their intellectual content. knowledge and experience with integrated library systems including online catalog management procedures/techniques; experience using a bibliographic utility (preferably OCLC); working knowledge of the application and interpretation of cataloging standards (AACR2 & LCSH); understanding of the principles of library authority control; accuracy, attention to detail and good organizational skills; ability to work independently as well as collaboratively. Desire: knowledge of Western U.S. History and a willingness to learn Nebraska history.
